i have just bought some new paiste alphas and new heads for my catalina mod set.... my bass drum has had a very strange sound for a while, i thought the new heads ( remo pinstripe) would do something, but it still has a very harsh slappy sound and vibrates the heck out of my snare. what do i do?

Check how loose your resonant head is tuned. If it's tuned to the frequency of your snare side then you'll get that sympathetic buzz, you can also tune up the snare side to get rid of it.

also it depends how you want your bass to sound. if you want to be just a thud tune it so the heads are barely tight and maybe put some dampeners inside it. but if you like more resonance then heartbeat has you covered.

have you got a pinstripe on the kick? if so next time you replace the kick head, get a Remo Powerstroke 3.

I have a catalina kit as well. Birch. I am having a tough time getting a satisfactory sound from my kick. i need low end with a round sound(not a thud).I also want good beater response off the head. i'm currently using Remo powerstroke3. With my old kit(stolen),a Tama Rock-Star pro,i used the same set up, with a piece of foam rubber about 10" across and 16 1/4" long.
I always like the setup. i could turn the foam sideays and play the drum open; depending on the room and the miking situation. Please help !!

I am beginning to think that it is just the nature of a lower end Birch kit. Maybe Maple is where it's at.I don't know what the wood config was on the Tamas.

I didn't like the sound of my Catalina Birch until I ported the resonant head. I put in a 4" port hole, and it took off some of the resonance with out killing all of it like overdampening does.

Nothing wrong with your bass drum that a decent batter head can't cure. Tune your snare drum though as it shouldn't vibrate so drastically.
