View Full Version : Fades Away Goes to jail!
Fades Away

Ha, yes Fades Away played in Newton County Correctional Facility yesterday. It's a max security prison. We played in front of about 250 in mates, and it was one of the most amazing exeriences of my life! I shook hands with murderers, rapists, and other men that have made terrible mistakes in their life. I was overwhelmed by the whole experience and basically thought this would be a cool place to vent. I was so proud of my band that we were able to provide an hour and half of time where they where having fun, and where in a room where they were not judged for what they have done. It's the most humbling experience i've ever had in my life and i just wanted to share this with you guys because you are all awesome! And i owe part of what happened to DC because they have kept me motivated in my playing and have taught me a ton! ROCK ON GUYS!:punk:

Wow, I've played just about every type of venue you can think of, but I've never played a jail.

Puts a new meaning to the term, "Captive Audience" :-) But, I gotta admit, that's a very cool idea ! :punk:
Yeah I was gonna say: Johnny Cash style.

Glad that murderers and rapists could have some fun in jail! Tax dollars are going to use keeping them happy for there life sentences..
Sorry Fadeaway, I don't mean to be disrespectful to you or the thread, I'm glad your band put on a good show, but I think people who have committed such heinous crimes shouldn't have such luxuries.

Ruz, I kinda had the same thought too for a moment, but just for a moment.
It may sound strange, but not all convicts are the scurge of the earth. Some have made honest mistakes, maybe a fatal DUI, or perhaps the wrongful incarceration of an innocent man with a bad lawyer. With advancements in DNA technology, they are finding more and more innocents that are imprissoned.
I realize that these may be exceptions to the rule, but as bad as those people have been, they're still humans and as such, to not allow something as basic as as a music group's performance would in itself be cruel. It's a strange twist on life.

Cycle, I understand where you are coming from, but as of now, in the eyes of the United States they have been deemed guilty of their crimes so it is assumed they have committed extremely cruel offenses and thus a cruel punishment doesn't seem so wrong. I know its cliche to say, but if your family or friend had been raped or murdered would you want the offender enjoying themselves in prison?
I apologize I don't want to hijack this thread OP.

Dude, no worries. I totally get you, and like I said, part of me agrees. Purely being hypothetical, if it was your family member that was accused of the crime you may feel the same way for them, that they should at least have such and such during their sentence.
Either way, I think it's a different kind of performance that many bands will probably not experience, and for that, my hat is off to fades away. That must have been intimidating as anything to be in that environment.

First off, thanks to everyone! I appreciate it! Now i should have clarified ruz4life, this was not a kick for the inmates. AND i want to EXTREMELY stress that your tax dollars did nothing for my band, or for those inmates. 25 guards volunteered to work overtime, unpaid. And we were not paid a single penny to play. We were able to deliver a positive message to dudes who need to hear it the most. I understaned where you're coming from as far as what they've done being unforgivable. That's your opinion and i respect it, because they are terrible acts. HOWEVER, place the blame on me, not them for putting on a show. They did not beg for it, your money did not pay for anything to do with it, it was my bands choice to provide this for these kinds of people, if you feel like they don't deserve that, you don't have a problem with the inmates, you have a problem with Fades Away. And we knew doing this would put us in this situation. Hate me, be angry that they got 2 hours to be guilt free, and to hear a positive message that alot of people don't think they deserve because I gave it to them. All opinions are well respected here, i'm just clarifying your misunderstanding. With that being said, i respect you just the same.
man i was a little thrown by thread title. i thought you were actually in jail at first. very glad to see its not so, and that you had a great show. awesome

Sometimes the Rapist and murders and what not are the ones who need to hear the positive message the most. Think about if they are truely corrupt people than they need some sort of positive message to get in their heads. They did wrong and they need to come back from it. I can see where you are coming from that their sentence should not be fun but a postive message to a person who needs also never hurts.
(If I sound like I am being mean in anyway I do not mean too. Not sure if I do or not lol. Cant tell tone of voice and body language over the net :shifty:)

I don't think anyone is attacking me, and know that we are all just having a mature conversation here, and I don't mean to attack anyone either. I just read your initial post and from it the parts that caught me were when you said about shaking hands with murderers, rapists, and saying it was awesome to provide an hour and half where they were having fun..
I agree they need to hear a positive message, but still feel in this country we are way to relaxed with criminals and offenders of this kind. Originally I didn't know what kind of band you were, so I assumed you were not a religiously oriented group.
I'm not trying to be an annoying , put you down for doing this type person. Negating the fact about where you played, I'm happy you had a solid gig and hope you have many more to come!

Good. As long as we're all on the same page here. Like KISSfan said, sometimes text can be misleading without the benefit of tone of voice.

All agreed! I know exactly where you are coming from Ruz4life! I too agreed strongly with you! This statement is directed towards everyone. I've been dreaming for the day i could be in a room alone with these men. I would like to take out every bit of anger, frustration, and pain they've cause on them. I would have loved to pound them with in an inch of their life. Well i finally got my wish, i got to meet these guys in a room alone, and they have names, stories, feelings, and most of all, they are starving for answers. They are so lost and are like giant children. I say giant because every hand i shook was so firm and HUGE that i felt like they could crush me at will. It's all circumstances. %99 of those guys "earned" what they got, however, we all change. I'm not trying to preach, i'm not saying that all of those guys are "Good" guys, I'm basically just trying to help people be less judgemental sometimes. You here the story on the news about this guy who killed such and such, and I've caught myself saying "If i could have an hour alone in a room with him and a baseball bat..." But this whole experience has shown me that these are real people who made bad decisions, yes of course, but most had no help available to them before this happened. Thanks to all of you for reading this, i really appreciate it. And this is why i LOVE dc! It's a great place to hold very interesting subjects!

Hey Fades glade to hear that you were able to spread the word. I was in a detention home for a month for skipping school when I was younger and that in turn inspired my uncle to start a detention home ministry. I was greatly inspired by your thread! Keep up the great job! F/T
