Yea i'm guessing it was, if you read his biography you'll see that he played with his hands quite a bit. Also in most Moby D.i.c.k solos half way through he would put his sticks down and play with his hands.

John Bonham regularly played solos with his hands. So does Tommy Aldrige. I don't know about any bleeding fingers stuff.
