Ok I am going to step up and start this thing, I know for a fact that there are some very talented drummers, EVEN if you don't think so, so lets see some videos, this is the best way I learned, I was scarred to death to post a video on this site, but I did it, and you guys and alot of other people really seem to like them, and your imput is so valuable, and has helped me so much, so I STRONGLY suggest or ENCOURAGE you to make your video of ANYTHING you want drumming wise and post that bad boy.

Here is one of mine, it is a newer one I did called understand by Jeremy Camp.

It is actually very easy, but does take a little time to sync it up.

I use windows movie maker, should be on your computer it comes free with xp or vista, open the video first, then drag it down to the top line of the storyboard, then open the audio or song you want to sync it with and add that to the second storyboard line, now it is just a matter of syncing the two together, if more detail is needed, just let me know.

Yea try again, and make sure the magnifing button is all the way up, you can zoom in to be able to edit like within 4 sec, it has always worked good for me, like I said before it can be a little time consuming until you get the hang of it, and you can also mess with both the audio and video.
I love this program, and I think it works great, you will figure it out, I am sure of it, but let me know if you need any more help.

Pdplayer

I think that is just automatically what it converts it to, I did not do anything to change it or anything.
when you are done making your video, got it all sync'd up, just go to save to computer, make sure it is below 90 megabits, and let it do its thing, and you should be good to go.

Here is the pattern, enjoy.

It's basically a compound time signature of 17/8 (5/8 + 5/8 + 7/8) and over the top of that he plays quarter note accents on the hi hat.

K = kick drum
S = Snare drum
- = rest

this is the pattern that the kick and snare play

K K - S - K K - S - K K - K - S -

That sound quality reminds me of a video I posted ages ago that I recorded with my mobile phone. That link is probably still on this forum somewhere. That was dodgy quality though, even worse than yours thanks very much to bad video quality and syncing and stuff aswell. Oh well, it was a bit of fun. Still haven't managed to re-record it with a real camera - man i'm lazy.

Lafirin, as soon as I get my video camera fixed (it's under warrenty, so it has to go to Illinois), I promise that I will do everything I can to get a video up, as long as everyone remembers that I've only been playing for 5 1/2 months! My playing is basic, but I feel like I'm getting it!

DC, I would bet that the difference between us is the perception of our drumming. I perceive that I am progressing with my drumming, and that makes me happy. Your perceive that you are not yet where you want to be, so you seem to downplay your talent.

You also have a drummer hubby, so you might even be subconsciously comparing yourself to him; wanting to impress him. I don't have that pressure. I just pleasing me (and doing a pretty darn good job, too :icon_mrgreen: ), and trying to have a good time.

Don't worry too much about the destination, just try to find enjoyment in the journey!

drum_chick
09-13-2007, 10:01 PM

pastor_bob
09-13-2007, 10:08 PM
Oh, well that's different. Never mind (think Gilda Radner's Emily Littella character here)!

I'm sure you're still carrying the burden of trying to impress him. I have only my mom here. She's staying with me while she recovers from hip replacement surgery. Impressing a mom is about the easiest thing in the world! If I just manage to hit the drums, she thinks I'm the greatest drummer of all time!

Your trad grip looks fine to me. The only thing i would say is that you try and use a bit more thumb and a bit less fingers. The only way of reaching high speeds with trad grip is to fully let the stick go.

A good exersize to practice this is to put the stick in your fulcrum, (In the web of your hand between thumb and the poiinterfinger.) and completely let go with your fingers and just use the thumb. Try to make the sick bounce so you only have to push down and not have to think about pulling up.

Good vid by the way.

well i cant help you with traditonal grip, i just discoverd i play a left hand trad grip. but with this solo theres one part that i dont enjoym its an awesome solos untill you switch back to matching grip then you drop the sturcture you had set up, it kinda felt like you were just liks now what, and hit things randomly. the entire rest of the solo was amazing, and i love the things you do with your ride.

Thanks man, yea after I switched I kind of lost the groove.

DD, you've got some good speed, my friend! I would suggest one thing for your solo, though. Try to find a way to blend from one tempo to another. the abrupt change in tempo makes things feel a bit choppy. If you can find the pocket, go out to play the fills, and then come back to the pocket before going into more fills, even if you have changed tempo somewhat as you go in and out of the pocket, I think you will have smoother transitions thoughout your solo.

All in all, though, pretty cool, DD! Thanks for sharing your drumming!

Vinny, PDPlayer, and Andreew, thanks for the kind words. It was much harder than I thought to put that video on here! Now that I have, I see what you are talking about with this thread, Kevin. For all the advice that we share on here, I can see that the best comes from the constructive criticism that we can offer one another. Vinny, you are right that I need to work on fills. All I have to offer is the single stroke rolls, and I will indeed work on other fills.

Andreee, I am using A ZBT 20" ride, a ZBT 14" crash, ZBT 14" hi-hats, a Wuhan 12" splash, a Zildjian A Custom 16" crash, and a Wuhan 18" china.

Good job nice timing in and out on time. You can start using the drums with your preaching to accent points. LOL Work on single stroke rolls just RLRLRL and LLLLLLLLLL RRRRRRRRRR and so on faster and faster but only as fast as you can do cleanly. Do you have a metronome ? If so use it if not pick one up.

Your drumming will overpower the drums on the record. Furthermore he needs to hear the drums on the song while he's playing. But I might be full of hot air, I never used a drumless song.

lol I wrote this big thing about how I do it then I deleted it and just threw my 2 cents in on what you asked Lafirin.

vinnysimmo
10-17-2007, 11:56 AM
when you play along with a song like that do you find music that dont have the drums or are you just playing along with the drums in the music?

I think its a lot of fun playing to drumless stuff but its a bit easyer staying in time if you play to a track with drums.

Anymore vids guys? havent seen anything up here lately.

I prefer to play to drumless songs so then you could put your own beats and creativity to the song. Playing along to songs with drums is really cool too because it gives you an idea if you are on the right track or not!

I have recorded a couple of jam sessions but not sure the best way to put them up on here

Ok, I finally got my vids to upload with sound, so here are a few of me playing, first kit, then djembe. I have issues with tempo about halfway through the vid on kit, where I try to abruptly start another groove.... which ends up gradually speeding back up and becomes the original groove, but hey, it's fun nonetheless! Remember, I've only played Djembe for a year, and I've only played on a kit regularly for the last six months!

Thanks guys! I really was just teasing... I was going to post the vids in their own thread, but thought it may seem a bit pretentious. I appreciate the comment on tuning PDP, I may not play as well as I'd like, but I can tune well enough. Sometime, we'll have to get Combatmed to come over to record a vid of his playing. He's a much heavier drummer than me, and can play the kit more fully than I. Sorry the sound quality is horrible by the way... no mics, just the camera.

Andreeew, if you want to have better self-esteem, just remember one very important truth. We are all good at different things. I may be better than you at some things, and you will be better than me at others. Where we end up with self-esteem issues is when we compare our weaknesses against someone else's strengths. You will always be the best you that has ever been!

I think that you are a very kind, and gentle young man, with a strong sense of family. If that was all you ever became, you could be very proud of yourself. Anything you add to your life from there is just extra special! Don't let anyone tell you different.

ATC, thanks. It always feels real comfortable to settle in behind the kit! I was also thinking that if you have a computer, you might be able to do what I did. I got a small Panasonic miniDV camcorder. I can record on the digital camcorder, and then download it to my computer. The camcorder wasn't too expensive, just around $150.

Please let me know about your feelings towards how my kit sounds in respect to both the quality of the instruments and the mix.

As for the mix I'll say the sound guy at that club wasn't the best. I think my HH's are a bit too loud while both my ride and my toms are a bit too soft. But as far as the mix goes I personally love the sound of my crashes and the snare. At this show I used my midnight fade pearl mmx maple custom kit but stripped down to a fusion set up. 22" bass, 10" tom, 12" tom, 14" floor tom and 14" mmx maple custom snare with a coated remo powerstroke 3 head on top that produced a great fat sound but left a little to be desired in the responsiveness. Evans 2 ply clear heads on top and evans 1 ply clear on bottom of the toms. Aquarian Superkick II on kick side and remo powerstroke 3 ebony on the front side of the bass. I used all the cymbals listed below in my profile except the dry reflector ride and the 18" crash....but in there place I added a 12" Zildjian splash and a 8" Zildjian K custom splash.

wow that was good kevin another incredible performance. i wish i could just listen to a track and be able to play along. just one little bit of constructive criticism if i may( you can just toss this out the window if you like its YOUR video and YOU have been playing a LOT longer than me) but like at the beginning not playing along to EVERY single note maybe if it was quiet at the beginning instead of you doing all the toms, and then like a big intro from you going into the main beat. do you get what im saying?

anyways nice video you get better each time

Naaaaaa....I'll ask around and see what I can come up with. My friend has a digital camera that takes videos...but I would hate to hear the sound quality on it

Hey, no sweat, my digital camera doesn't do the greatest sound quality either. Of course, I'm not looking for studio quality at this point! LOL

My singer/guitar and my bassist needed some footage for a school video project. I decided to edit a version for youtube myself haha. We basically got my dv cam, set it up on a tripod, and rented out another dv cam from the school. I had my drum mics in, and their guitars plugged into the mixer. Then we basically just improvised and had fun. Turned out pretty cool.

Your videos were great Taylor. Your band is really good as well!

Well, here's a video of me. I was messing around earlier today with this, and I kinda like it, haha. It's in 11... I count it as two groups of 3 and then one of 5. I think there are a few times in there when I add an extra beat accidentally. There are some timing errors as well, especially towards the end. I always get nervous in front of cameras. :shifty: Let me know what you think!

Nicely done Zajn, and it's nice to see you back among us! Unless I missed something, it looked to me that all your bass beats came from a single pedal. Is that correct?

Very inspiring video!

Thanks... and yes, most of it came from a single pedal PB. Right near the end there is some double-kick playing in there that you might not be able to hear cause of the sound quality.

Cool M.Intent! Wild seeing the lighted sticks in the dark!! The only suggestion that I have is not to forget that you can use the toms too. It will break up the continuous cymbal sound. Otherwise, it was a solid effort!

BTW, it's good to see you back at Drum Chat!
