I disagree completely. I've known many drummers through the years that have led their bands successfully. You must simply pinpoint your weaknesses (what it is that's causing conflict) and correct them. Sometimes it's a slow learning process but I'm a believer that you can do just about anything that you set your mind to. It may be harder for some than others. Some are better followers than leaders and visa versa.

hmm....good point...course....doesn't help much that my town doesn't actually have any REAL musicians and all the ppl i've tryed to start bands with weren't really worth it....but taht's beside the point....maybe im just a better follower...thanx 4 the insight

....hehe....hey i got an idea.....we should fig out a way to hear eachother...like if u have access to some sorta recording device doesn't have to be high quality just any old thing and get it on ur computer then maybe we could post the audio files on here...that would be fun...then we could share beats and stuff and have a jolly good time

Thats a good idea. :dancing: We could share MP3 files of each other playing, or even better yet, have some type of instructional thread where you could catch a few lessons.

But as for starting a band, I agree with Drummer, we can start them just like anyone else, but as for having a tight band, well that is up to the indiviuals. Everybody needs to have the same goals and desires in the band. :icon_lol:

we'll have to talk to the admins....we'll have to send audio files as zip's which is fine but the max size is like 39.1k which is tiny for an audio file...basically what that amounts to is like maybe 5 sec of a very low low quality..not worth it basically...so we'll have to ask them to allow us to post larger zip files...or somethin....maybe they would allow bigger files for just one thread and zip files only i dunno...

Yeah Utopia, I didn't even think about that. I totally forgot about the space that is needed for something like that. I guess if other sites can do it, so can we. Lets talk with Admin about this and see what they say.

I also think that this would be another awesome benefit to attract new members to where as they have a place to come and find some help or to advance in their playing.

We shall see.....

HEAR YA THERE...the humidity [combined with the heat index] is actually what makes it almost intolerable, rather than the heat by itself...as opposed to say Nevada or Montana, which is a really dry & more tolerable heat [if you have skin moisturizerss & all that stuff, & don't stay in the direct sun a prolonged length of time w/o sunscreen...durn, i sound like those Home Shopping Network gals or 1 of those late-night info-mercials, eek]...

Oh well, i hear central TX is just as bad, or perhaps worse, if that's possible...6 of one, half-dozen of the other, i say...

Frankie says: "Humid, baaad...dry, gooood"...[for wood drums, that is]:shifty:

actually about starting a band with friends... in the band i started, i met the guys because they played music and then we became friends because of the band.

Utopia, you'll more than likely play with many bands in your lifetime. I know you had your heart in this one but move on my friend. It sounds like you have a great attitude and your ability to initiate a band at your young age is impressive. I'm sure you'll go on to excell at whatever you do.

In my opinion, it is the most beneficial to always try and play with musicians that are better than you. You'll get a lot farther a lot faster. Sometimes it's best just to be a sideman and chalk up the years of experience. This will allow you to concentrate on getting ahead and you can let someone else run the band (which can become very time-consuming).

(if thats a real crime.. dont think so..) i HATE it when my drum teacher always says "oh heres the band, and then theres the drummers." it makes me soo mad! if its not working out for you, keep tryin cuz there is no reason why a drummer cant be in charge of a band.

I guess it comes down to what type of person you are aswel. Like if you think u can take charge then dominate the situation and do it, start the band. If u sit back, you don't really no where the band is going so much. But if u believe your band can work then make it happen. God damn it sleep your way to the top if u hav to. lol hee hee.

Have you found that your sense of timing in karate has been helped by studying music? I've always felt that martial arts and music are closely related disciplines.

Back to the topic: I rember hearing Neil Pert say something about drummers not accepting being regarded as the "lowly time keeper".

right on...yeah I've finally gotten to a point where I can play guitar well so I can effectively write my own music so I have no problems starting my own bands...which is pretty much reqired to start a band in my town cause we got all kinds of guitarest just not ones that can write which is why all of my previous bands failed till now....

good luck with your band Utopia. They come and go, break up and get back together, some are like a crazy relationship. I've been in a band for about 6 years but the kicker is that we split up several times in that time period. It wasn't personal feuds or anything like that we just had things come up in our lives that required our "band time". Now we live about 50 miles apart and we meet every saturday hoping that we can take all the way.

Starting a band is like starting a long-term relationship with a woman. You've got to date around before talking long-term commitments. Based on this theory, I would recommend jamming with a number of musicians first. Then, choosing the right ones that you believe would work the best. Good Luck !

Josh Freese started A Perfect Circle.

Buddy Rich

Louie Belson

...and so many more.

Hold out for the musicians you want.

EDIT: Wow, didn't realize this thread was 4 years old!! LOL, hopefully not an issue with this guy anymore.

At the moment i would say i do 90% of our Band behind the scene's stuff, Gigs, promo/advertising stuff, sorting all the money out, our band started with me and the Guitarist and we brought everyone in and built up our studio and brought all the PA and stuff, i would say it depends on what type of person you are rather than what you play.

Cheers Mark

I started my band and pretty much do everything as far as behind the scenes stuff. I'm a picky PITA too .. lol. I agree with MTC, the instrument you play has no bearing on if you can start and run the band, it's all about your personality and level of determination and commitment (it takes a lot, trust me, just look through my band management thread in the band section)

I also really hate it when a guitarist will be speaking to another and say " yeah, so and so is my drummer" as if they own em lol

Drummers starting bands? Psh, soon they'll be wanting to vote.

My current band was my first attempt and its working fine. You just have to find musicians on the same page who can flex alittle for others. It also helps to have your own PA.

I book the shows.
I collect the money.
I have the final say on what songs we are going to learn.
Oh and my favorite part, If you can't play it i'll find someone else who can.
But the truth is if you don't get along off stage it will never work.

This is why I'd last about 5 minutes in a band.
