hey guys,
My dad, brother, and I have a music room that has all out musical equipment in it and we're constantly in a out of it. For the drums, they can't be played past 9. Guitars and others don't matter. I need an efficient way to soundproof the room, so I can play drums late without annoying the neighbors or family. Any suggestions?

I've never understood how people can shell out perfectly good money for a wooden musical instrument and then leave it out in the garage. Our garage gets well over 110 in the summer and below freezing in the winter. I'd hate to think what shape our gear would be in if we left it out there.

Oh, btw- you can probalby get scrap carpet pad from your local flooring retailer. They recycle it and will usually have a bin in back full of it. If you ask they'll likely give you some for free. You can staple it to the walls & ceiling. Makes great sound proofing.

13 drummer looks like you need the following.

-Staple Gun (an electirc one is best for upholstery about 150.00bucks)
-Mattresses (Sleep Number 3000 zzzz is about 800.00 bucks)
-Scrap carpet ( 10 bucks sometimes free)
-drumshield ( I'm not sure)

Phew... we violinst just use a mute (1.00) on the bridge. Looks to me like I have a lot of expenses to cover playing the drums.

Cool... Any pictures?
How am I gonna stick a 40KG Mattress to the ceiling?
And should I put some on the floor too?

Carpet pad (the stuff that goes under the carpet) will work better. The foam kind is reasonably light. Use a hammer tacker to stick it to the walls & ceiling. They run about 35 bucks.

Here's a link to show you what a hammer tacker is: http://www.dhcsupplies.com/handtools/tackers.htm?OVRAW=hammer%20tacker&OVKEY=hammer%20tacker&OVMTC=standard

hey guys,
Guitars and others don't matter.

Wha? Sounds like sombody needs a bigger amp!

Seriously, you can get carpet pad scraps from your local flooring retailer. Just use a hammer tacker to tack it to the walls and ceiling.

I was thinking of doing that, but i need some cheap carpet, because iv got quit a big room, in my basment there is 2 concret walls, and the other 2 sides are wood, my walls are about 30 feet by 15 feet.

Carpet won't soundproof a room. But will dampen the sound and stop some of the sound from escaping. But by no means will it soundproof. Do the concrete walls first if you are more concerned with the sound INSIDE the basement, and the wooden ones first if you are more concerned about sound OUTSIDE the basement.

yeah its defiantly the sound inside im worried about, since my set is about a foot away from a concrete wall, I have to wear ear protection even if im playing fairly quietly.

so what would help my situation better, carpets or mattresses, or egg cartons? I was considering all of these but don't know which one would be the best choice for me.

Whatever you have availalbe. the thicker the substance the better off you are.

yeah, mattresses are pretty bulky, Id go with those. don't egg cartons do something different then take the volume down? doesn't it bring out the acoustics in the room aswell?

It won't soundproof a room but it will absorb alot of sound.

EGG CARTONS DO NOT WORK SO DONT TRY IT:naughty:
if your room is really big maybe you should divide using accoustic giprock and accoustic foam this will also make a smaller room to soundproof thus making it cheaper

if its more just the sound inside the basement your worried about try hanging heavy drapes on the concrete walls
good luck with it

Lafirin, a while back I read an article that said that egg cartons do not soundproof walls. They only prevent sound from bouncing around the room.

Okie doke i got the answer
You need roof to floor curtains. Made out of the thickest material money can buy and make about 3 or 4 layers of it. Tafe spent 1500$ on a curtain that covered one adverage sized wall..... These things are like a freight train to a person as sound to a stopper.... There majic! (Because they dont sit smooth either).

As for the roof. Buy some soundproofing tiles and cheker plate them. Youll find it will turn the sound in to a really really whisper sound outside and u can jam all night! :> Make sure you have carpet as well. With underlay and thick shag. It would be ultimate! :>

Egg cartons wont help thats a myth. Mattresses will be good for absorbing sound yes. Also seal door frames etc. to help keep sound from escaping. Thick carpet with deep underlay will help isolate vibration, I hate carpet on the walls + ceiling in my music room stops the sound bouncing around.

BTW there are proper bass traps and sound absorbing foam stuff you can get to go on the walls.

This stuff works wonders, and is moderately inexpensive.

egg crate matresses work well since they are light and foam. You can put them up anywhere.

Beave, those egg-crate mattresses help, but I believe Musician's Friend and companies that work with musicians or broadcasters have something similar that works equally well, if not better.

Speakin' of radio stations, I worked at a radio station that was once based in a cluster of converted mobile homes (looked like a redneck mansion, or--God forbid--a FEMA community for Katrina victims); the program director at the time took red-white-and-blue shag carpeting (which the owner got on a trade-out for advertising) and tacked it up all over the studios and production room. Looked awful but it did provide some soundproofing--but to this day I will never use shag carpeting for anything!

Does anybody know how much soundproofing a room would cost?Im working on a room in my basement that Ive built from scratch . Not quite finished it yet but Im guessing when complete it will have cost me about 5-6 thousandfor material .

The room is about 24' x 18' . I used dry-lok on the block walls , put tar paper on the concrete floor for the dampness then built a 2x4 floor on top with foam panels in between the studs . The walls are also 2x4 studs with foam panels between the block wall and stud wall . The stud walls are insulated with fiberglass insulation and I put plywood over the 2x4 's instead of drywall so I can carpet the walls and floor . I will add an 8 ft drop ceiling with accoustic tiles and some recessed lights when finished . The floor joists for the 1st floor are insulated with r-19 insulation. I ran speaker wire to all 4 corners of the room for 200 watt speakers that I have . Cant wait to get it done .
