My Ludwig Downbeat kit, purchased from Manny's Music, NYC, in the summer of 1971.

Not included in the photo is the 16x16 FT that came with it.
Great minds think alike! BTW, you got a great deal on that kit. I might try your snare restoration tips. Thanks.

SPL (Sound Percussion Labs) makes a 4 pc Street Bop shell pack in birch that retails for less than $400. If I remember correctly, I paid $300 a few years ago. After swapping out the stock...
Thanksgiving 1971. The late show at the Academy of Music, NYC. Procol Harum was the headliner. King Crimson was the second act. Yes opened the show. A top ten concert for sure. Six months later, Yes...

Very nice story. Great memories to come for all involved.
I may be biased, but I think drummers are the best!
If you band's name is Byzantine, this rack is perfect. Otherwise, not so much.
I agree! The "core" of my Ludwig kit is 46 years old, and my oldest Zildjian is 50 years old. I guess I am playing my dream; all I ever wanted was Ludwig and Zildjians.
I asked the same question to drummer friend of mine about my '71 Ludwigs, especially using them for gigging. His answer: Isn't that what you bought them for? And I gotta admit, he's right.
Yes! I saw them many times in the 70s. They opened for Tull during the Thick as a Brick tour. I also saw them as headliners. They were/are great.
John P. Weathers!
Fred Armisen is quite an accomplished drummer. He toured with Blue Man Group before becoming a regular on Saturday Night Live.
I've played in jams a few times with a friend of mine who also happens to be a drummer. It's just like playing with any other musician: listen and play something complementary. Like guitar players,...
As a younger (hence, not as smart) man, I drilled into my Ludwig (now vintage) bass drum to accommodate an extra cymbal holder. It was not a virgin bass, as it already had a cymbal arm and rail...
The thread tree is there, but depending on the background it sometimes is hard to see. It's right above the "Reply to thread" button near the top of the page.

My only regret is losing the receipt for my 1971 Ludwig five-piece set (one up, two down) purchased new from Manny's Music in NYC. I can't remember if I paid $570 or $750. And, of course, I still...
It doesn't matter if drummers can't spell. As long as they can count!
They are essentially the same drum with a different finish. The Acrolite looks a little plain to me but the Black Galaxy, or Black-rolite, looks great. It's like a black sparkle finish, really...
Congrats, OldeEnglishD. At some point you will not consider four limbs doing different things, but four limbs contributing to one musical phrase. Until then, and even after that, have fun.
That's the combo I used: Pinstripes over Ambos. The mounted top at 10" is always gonna be high, but the floor tom goes pretty deep.
Yes, I have that kit too. Bought to leave at rehearsal site and now use it for gigs. Compact and easy to carry. After replacing the stock heads and some fine tuning, the kit sounds great. I couldn't...
If you're even semi-serious about becoming a good jazz drummer using traditional grip, find a good teacher. That will accelerate the learning curve.
Yeah, judging by the strainer and the nickel hardware, that drum must be from the '50s, maybe earlier. I'm sure it sounds great the way it is. Keep in mind, while the snare drum is arguably the most...
