Ludwig Acrolite would be my choice. they are cheap especially used on ebay and they sound really, really good.

+1 for the Acrolite, best sounding all around snare for the money. Extremely versatile for just about any genre, and it records very well. You can pick one up in good condition for under $100.

Well just because everyone else said Acrolite I'm just gonna throw in a suggestion for the Pork Pie Big Black Brass. I've been told it's the same as a Black Beauty except not hand-engraved or whatever, and it's only like 250 bucks. I recently got the chance to try it out at the store and it sounded fantastic.
