    Default Snare drum depth

I've been thinking of picking up an old, cheap, second-hand tom and installing a snare on it, to use as a secondary (or thirdorary) snare ... just to check out what it sounds like (I'm in a tinkering phase at the moment; also in the midst of organising to build rototoms, a gong drum, and a 10 x 4 popcorn snare).

I'm bidding on a cheap as chips 12x9 tom, and wondering how the depth of the drum will effect it all. I know that a lot of people are using deeper snares (6 inch or so), but is 9 perhaps too deep to get good snare response from?

    Anybody?

Well, if Vinnie Paul uses a 14x8 snare, it can't be too bad. Listen to some Damage Plan or later Pantera and see if you like the sound of his snare. That will probably be something similar to what your snare sounds like.

I knew he used a deep snare ... but 8 is deeper than I thought (I use a piccolo snare for main when I play metal ... doesn't work so well for punk though).

Cool - I'm looking forward to seeing what 12x9 will be.

The drum tech at my friendly local music store does it for a relatively low fee.

i just bought this Tama Maple 14x 6" snare with 10lugs. I'm having diffuclties getting the sound i want. That thing ring & overtone. I'm, using Aquarian dotted coated on top & 24snare wires. Any ideas to get a better sound? I want my snare to sound something like Dennis chambers'..
