It varies. Norman Weinberg published a book on standardized drum notation years ago but nobody seems to follow it. You still get lots of variations. Most publishers simply use their own rhythm key off to the side to save confusion.

Yeah, there is really no proper way to notate drum sheet music. As long as the notes are in the right place, you can pretty much put whatever you want there.
That's why I think tab is a lot simpler sometimes. Most of the time people follow standards for tablature.

didn't think this thread went through cause my internet explorer crashed
anyway that's really a bummer now i got figure what different stuff from different place means
Yeahh... us drummers got it hard on when it comes to sheet music.
I would disagree. I don't think drum music is hard at all compared to other instruments where, in addition to rhythm, they have melody. Us drummers actually have it pretty easy.
I'm in agreement with you drummer, Drum Music is probably far easier to read and understand quickly than any other instrument sheet music. Heh, it's funny when guitarists look at drum tabs though. I was transcribing a song one day, and my mate comes up and says "that must be the easiest song ever, it's all open notes".
Ahhh, guitarists = P

I'm trying to play some advanced techniques but some of the note combinations are confusing me. I can read and understand alot of it but i can't seem to comprehend it all. Any suggestions or advice on where i can learn this particular thing. I'm learning on my own. I can't find anyone to teach me personally.

well, i agree that drum notation is basic and easy to learn but if my teacher hadnt pointed things out to me, well none of it would of made sense.
a suggestion is to take some lessons with a good teacher. that helps alot
I wish i could take lessons but due to different circumstances it's not possible.Originally Posted by livewire80
