almost all hi-hat stands have swivel legs. Rotate!
Hey all-
I am looking into buying a double pedal, and have a few issues with my hi-hat stand and how to position the slave when i have a 3-legged hi-hat stand. I do not want to spend $100 on a 2-leg stand, becuz as we all are these days, i am on a budget and also have many things that need to be bought. It wouldnt be a problem if i didnt mind my hats farther away, but i like them close to me. Thoughts? Suggestions? Ways you guys do it? Thanks.

My hi-hat stand must hate me then, cuz i cannot for the life of me figure out how to rotate the legs. Is it just me, or is there a big secret to rotating the legs? Or does my stand just not rotate? The stand is a cheap Sound Percussion, but reading the description on MF says it does rotate. So i either have a different SP stand, or im missing something here.

What model stand did you get? Most of the swivel stands I've seen don't really require any effort to get the to swivel. Just loosen the wing nut and it should move freely.
tah, it looks like there is a set screw that your drum key fits. It should be at the bottom of the tube, right below the tension adjustment. Loosen that and you should be able to rotate the legs.

After an hour of messing with the stand, i checked MF and it turns out, my stand is a different, cheaper model. I guess i am going to have to buy a new hi-hat stand. Suggestions anybody?

As i have said, i have a Sound Percussion stand now. It is the one i am having trouble adjusting the legs on. I am looking at the PDP HH820 2-leg stand. MF has it for $80 with generally positive reviews. Good buy?

My hi-hat stand's legs don't rotate either, but you can make it work.

I have the SP stand with a swivel base. It works, and was pretty cheap. There are better stands out there, and I'm not sure I'd buy this one again, but this one does the trick for now until I break it or it completely wears out.
I've only had it for 6-7 months and it's already showing some signs of wear. I'm by no means a super heavy hitter or a road warrior. But like I said, it does the trick in a pinch.

i would love to hear your thoughts on how that works. Smoothness, switching from pedal to pedal, etc. Thanks

The PDP you're looking at is a good buy. I've had it for five years now and it is still perfect. Add a DW clutch and you have one heck of a hi-hat stand that you will be able to put a double pedal right next to.

IAmNotATable, thanx. After seeing that a double pedal can be positioned to my liking without a new stand, i think i will keep my current stand until i have to buy a new one. Thanx guys!

Hey man, sorry I didn't get back to you until now, just saw your post lol. For me, it works perfectly. I too wanted to buy a new hi-hat stand, but it really isn't necessary. The pedals sit right next to each other, and the footboards are at the same height. The leg from the hi-hat stand might seem like it would get in the way, but really it doesn't, so switching from pedal to pedal is seamless. Hope this is helpful...let me know if you have any more questions!

Yeah, It's been quite a bit ago... I think PB had talked about the
"clutter" under foot using a dbl pedal. I've belly ached about it
for years and finally came up with a solution, (for myself anyway..?).
I ended up going with a remote hh which is good and bad... At any
rate I found a guy on CL that was selling a TAMA air ride snare stand.
The stand helps to create a massive amount of room for ya' at your
feet. It's legs are alot smaller foot print and a ton of adjustment.
The thing is incredibly stout and super nice! Actually, I ended up
gettin' my hands on 2 of 'em. It was a strange time, For some reason...
TAMA had stopped production on 'em and I guess the under foot "clutter",
Sparked it back up again..? I thought I had a pic of the mess in place
and I guess I don't. Here's a pic of the first one I bought... .02
I'm also plagued with the roto's stand in the hatchet knot..?
Sheez, What a mess..!

Q-Would you buy another one if it were stolen?
A-Well yeah... But, I'd probly turn into a homicidal maniac first!
If you're looking for a high hat stand, get anything by Pearl, they're amazing! The legs do swivel on it so you can put your slave pedal wherever the hell you like and Pearl's hardware is so immense you can put a pair of tanks on top of it for high hats and it won't even wobble.
I fight with this issue alot and a swivel deffinitly fixed it.
I couldnt get mine to fit, but my stepbrother was throwing out a bunch of old gear he didnt need, and i looked through it and found a '3' leg el cheapo stand, with the rightmost leg broken off. I put it on my set, and it works fine. if i adjust the leg length, and drive the screws at the bottom into the mat, its pretty stable. Just an idea.

Not sure about anyone else, but maybe try putting the left kick pedal on the OTHER side of the hi hat pedal. I know it sounds weird, but you may find this is easier too - just another opinion/option to play around with.

Thanks guys, i think im gonna first just buy my double pedal, then try Defcon's setup, and if that doesnt work out, I'll just buy a new stand then.

The way defcon does it is the way I used to do it on my old set up. Worked fine.
Got a swivel stand with my Gretsch, though, and it works awesome.
