You can't go wrong with some thrash metal. Metallica or Megadeth are good choices.
So, at music school, I have to do a performance assessment. This assessment is like THE BIG assessment/test at the end of the year, and I have to organize a band (or bands) to play three songs from different genres. I also have to chart out the songs, write out the drum notation for the songs, create a portfolio, and assume the roles of a stage manager and musical director.
I am wanting to play a metal song, a funk song and a jazz song. I have the funk and jazz songs sussed out, but I'm having trouble trying to decide on a metal song. Most of the metal bands I listen to are too technically complex for either me or other musicians to play.
Now, I'm looking for a metal song with reasonable speed (160 - 190 bpm), double kick passages, tasty fills around the kit, something not TOO complex for the guitarist(s), vocalist(s), bassist. Preferably clean vocals. The assessment is focused around me as the drummer, not so much the other musicians. So, something that's just straight 16ths on the kick for a few minutes doesn't really show off my technical ability.
Anyone (Marti, SGD, I'm looking at you!) know of any songs that kinda fit around that? I would play some Gojira, Symphony X or Strapping Young Lad but that's kinda too hard for the other musicians (well, vocalists) to pull off.

The only two constants I have are DW and Zildjian.
I agree with Nechre most of the 80s metal is great musically as it doesnt rely too heavily on double bass, yet still is powerfull. Metallica, Slayer, Pantera ect.
+1 on 80's metal.

I go to my local drum shop and purchase my sticks. I like to touch them before I buy them ;-)

Does the band require a vocalist, if not just do it as an instrumental. Iron madien comes to mind.
Go with Metallica....I think they're going to fit your needs.

Sounds like a cool project.
Although Eddie Trunk and many others believe\think heavy metal started with Sabbath, many others believe\think heavy metal started with this--although it's a cover of the original. Might be a good song?

I was thinking something along those kinda lines... I only know one person who can do those sort of vocals, though, and he doesn't go to my school :/
Anyone know of any bands with drumming similar to Lamb of God but with clean vocals? Otherwise I would just play Ruin but I dunno anyone who can do the vocals :/

I'd say Hangar 18 by Megadeth, It has double bass parts, Awesome solos and every person in the band would have their moment to shine.

Hmm, have you though of something like maybe prison sex by tool? metally, not double bass, fairly simple on other instruments, but vocals would be a challenge, but they are clean and the drumming is semi to moderately complex. a little double bass, and some pretty complex patterns.
just a different thought or direction to go in.
