    Default Gel pad

I didn't want to hijack jmhudak17's thread. It got me thinking about the gel pads. I tried one the other day, and really liked how dead it is. Does anyone here use one, does it help or hinder your playing? It seems like it would help build endurance and speed. Any opinions?

You mean moongels? Yeah, I use them. I have an EXTREMELY ringy snare so I use them to muffle it.

Constinator, I think clrizz is talking about a gel practice pad. I don't have any experience with a gel pad, but if we are talking about a practice pad, how would it be different from practicing on a pillow?

A gel pad would obviously have more bounce. A pillow absorbs the impact and basically sucks. I own one practice pad that I never, and I mean NEVER use. It's the one by Remo that can be tuned. When I look at it on the way to my drums I think, "That looks nice."

yeah I used one a while back. It seemed to work really well to make you work each stroke not much rebound at all. actually helped me with my stick control and double strokes when executing rolls. Instead of relying on bounces It forced me to use fingertips to control double strokes. Neat pad for certain issues like that but still a believer in the HQ stuff for regular practice.

PB got it right! I don't remember who made it, but this gel pad was like a moon gel the size of a normal practice pad(6" or 8") and it had ZERO bounce. I mean the stick would hit the pad and just stop, you have to lift the stick up to strike it again. I have a pad by Vater (mouse pad type) and a Remo pad (more like an actual drum head)

The big thing is noise, the gel pad really makes none, and you still get a bit of thumping from the pillow(the wife starts to get annoyed after 20 minutes on the pad while watchingTV). I think tomorrow, I'll make a beanbag pad, and see how that goes.

The gel pad will give you forearms like Popeye. I tried one a couple of months ago and will be buying one someday.

Homemade pad works great! Had some extra leather laying around, and made a beanbag with a strap. It fits right on top of my Vater pad(or anywhere else for that matter) still a little loud, but the price was right!

The practice pad that looks like Moongel is made by RTOM; the same company that makes Moongel. In fact, they call it the Moongel Workout pad.
