    Go forth and rock!
Playing with other folks develops listening skills, ability to cover different styles (even if just a little bit) and will inspire you to practice.

It's very important to at least gel pretty well with the rest of the musicians. Not that you have to share all your musical and outside interests, but enough for a common bond to form.
It's a lot like dating. Some bands just aren't gonna be a fit.
You'll know when it is right.
You'll be excited to come back.

"You may not be doing 10-minute drum solos but nobody that's dancing on the dance floor in a bar wants to hear that anyway."

Are you really sure about that?

If you are good at what you do, people will get close and watch you. If you are NOT good at playing, then people don't want to hear it.

I've never caused a mass exodus to the door in about 45 years of playing in bands. If a famous drummer, regardless of his ability, takes a solo, everybody stands and screams, but, G-O-D forbid, a unknown drummer in a unknown band takes a solo and they close the place down. Another stupid assumption.

as far as joining a band... i'd say don't rush into it. My friend from high school and i use to jam whenever we could. Those were some of the best times. I miss those days and also playing along to my records and whatever came on the radio. I'm not against lessons I just chose to teach myself and I'm glad I did. I feel more pride in the accomplishments I've been able to do for myself and with others with the route I took.

Hope to do more recording one of these days.. i love that process.
