    Default 12" snare?

I was watching a vid on youtube about a 12x7 snare. It was perfect: it had just enough crack, pop and depth to it. On high tuning, it was probably one of the best snares I've ever heard. I think it was a mapex fastback black panther, if I'm mistaken, I'm sorry, I was like on the floor praying to God to let me have that snare.
I searched for it, couldn't find it, but I came across a 12x7 steel LP snare for $95. I wasn't too sure about it, being it's LP, so I had reason to believe it would come across more as a timbale.
Anyway would a 13x7 snare give me a similar tone to the Mapex? I'm not too familiar with any snares besides my own, so... help a brother out here please!

I love 12 inch snares! they are just so sweet
a 13 inch would give you... somwhat of a comparable sound, but not really the same.

It would be roughly similar, yes. Check out the 12" Pork Pie Little Squealer. It's probably not as deep, but it sounds good too. I love poppy snares like that. I have two 13"s that have the sound I think you're looking for. You wouldn't be disappointed with that size snare.

Chris Adler uses a 12x5 custom Mapex Black Panther. That sound made me want a high pitched snare. Guitar Center had a 13x7 Vented Pork Pie Little Squealer. It was perfect. You could tune it up to Heaven and that baby would deliver. I could almost guarantee you would love a 13x7 snare.

If you ever get the cash I highly suggest having TMD make you one. Tom took months of discussions we've had about the sound I wanted and turned it into a chambered acrylic snare that has crack, pop, attack, and depth. It's ridiculously gorgeous and gorgeous sounding. I say too often I just want to rub it all over me.

One reason I decided against getting a 12" snare (I contemplated getting the Adler custom for a while) was because the heads I like to use (Aquarian) weren't normally carried in that size. You were basically limited to the heads that came with the drum and then the cheaper ones normally stocked in that size by retailers.

I went a little off topic but I hope that helped!

    I don't know about a 13 x 7, but here is a sample of my 13 x almost 7 (6.5).

Have you ever heard Joey Jordison's signature snare? It's a 13x6.5 and it sounds GREAT. It's got a nice, clear crack with a really hardcore rimshot. Plus I'm guessing you like Joey's work judging by your name lol. I'd post a video if I could, but I'm in school and YouTube is blocked >.>

My thinking exactly. But not neccesarily the new Joey snare. The black one is exactly the same as the red and black fade one, but $100 cheaper on MF.

I go to my local drum shop and purchase my sticks. I like to touch them before I buy them ;-)

I know what's joey's snare sounds like lol. Its the most godly snare ever made. That's my dream snare what I DO NOT understand is why he triggers it :( ). However I unfortunately do not have $250 to get the black one, I'm $200 short. This summer when I get a job (trying to get a car by age 17) ill have enough money to get the car and eventually the JJ snare.

My school has youtube unblocked :P raywilliamjohnson plays in my chem class every day my teacher <3's RWJ... Besides I also get to go on espn, check my fantasy teams, go on drumchat (sometimes, bc it doesn't log me in due to security reasons), and basically do whatever :P

Don't forget the Metalworks. It's cheaper and, in my opinion, sounds better when cranked.
