Ah, Stewart Copeland. With a great Zairean musician, Ray Lema on vocals.

The Bhundu Boys. Saw these guys live years ago in the 90's. This is a style they play in Zimbabwe called Jit.

Great stuff, Drumbledore!!! I'm familiar with Fela & Femi Kuti, but not most of these other guys.
Digging the Salif Keita stuff! It's amazing how closely he resembles Malford Milligan, a singer from Austin, TX who has done a lot of stuff with Chris Layton, Eric Johnson & other Austin cats...
Copeland's 'The Rhythmatist' really opened my mind up to African rhythms when I was a kid just getting into drums. Used to do a lot of percussion jams with some Africans when I lived in Houston: Nigerian, Senegalese & San (Bushmen). Learned a lot of 6/8 & polyrhythmic stuff from them!

The Berber blues-funk of Tinariwen, a band made up of Tuareg nomads from Mali. Discovered them through Peter Gabriel.

Okay, what do Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, prog-rock guitar legend Robert Fripp and East-Bay Ray from the Dead Kennedys all have in common?

They all played on THIS album by Rimitti, or Cheika Rimitti, an Algerian "Raļ Music" singer.

And don't forget Ginger Baker's two "Air Force" albums from the early 70's. Lots of African performers. Some famous, some not. He still lives there too.

Of course! A lot of us Western drummers are indebted to guys Ginger Baker (and the guy who first exposed him to African rhythms, his drum teacher Phil Seaman), who opened our eyes to the origin of jazz, Latin and blues (and eventually rock music)....Africa.

Love the fact that I found the DVD that these clips came from...and it was sitting in a discount bin at JB Hi-Fi for nine bucks!

Great stuff, D-dore! I'm really digging the Tinariwen stuff, never heard them before!!! VERY bluesy for sure.
Here's another from North Africa on the other side: Gigi, a fantastic Ethiopian singer (who is now also Bill Laswell's wife BTW).

African/South Asian mix here: Gigi with Tabla Beat Science (Karsh Kale on the kit, Zakir Hussain tabla, Laswell bass). Sorry to dilute the African thing on this thread, but this is too good to not post!

    Lol.....well I guess I'll have to start a South-East Asian thread.....AND a Middle East/North African one.....AND an Eastern European/Transcaucasian one too... :P

Okay, seeing PeachTx mentioned Gigi (and I wasn't sure whether Ethiopian stuff was going to sound too different to some people's ears), here's a great fusion of Ethiopian and Latin stuff that I got to hear of years back (a mate of mine married an Ethiopian girl, and she's introduced me to this guy's stuff).

Salif Keita's old band, Les Ambassadeurs du Rail. Pretty funky.

One of my UK cousins sent me this, knowing I'm into World Music......a great great UK guitarist, Justin Adams (from Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart) collaborating with a musician from The Gambia, Juldeh Camara.

Jeez, time flies! Hadn't had much of a chance to look at this thread for well over half a year. When I did, I found that all the YouTube links got 'jumbled up' a bit thanks to some changes. I'd been able to correct my links again, but for others who had posted videos on this thread, somehow I can't fix them up. Any of our mods able to do that?

South Africa's best flugelhorn player, Hugh Masekela, guesting on Paul Simon's "Graceland" Tour. Fantastic musicians in this line-up, including Ray Phiri on guitar, Bakithi Kumalo on bass and I think that's his brother Vusi Kumalo on drums (or probably Isaac Mtshali). "Graceland is a great introduction to South African rhythms, especially 'township jive'.
