    I'm going to add to my list:

    4. Paul McCartney- not because I think he's a particularly great player, but because he's Paul!

    5. Charlie Hunter - He plays a hybrid bass/guitar (3 bass strings, 5 guitar) and kicks major behind. Seriously one of the most talented string pluckers of our time.

    If I could only choose one, it would be:

    Vic Wooten - just because he is such an incredibly talented and versatile musician who can make a bass come alive.

    Others that I admire:

    John Entwhistle - anyone that could rhythmically stay with Keith Moon has my respect.
    Geddy Lee - Rock solid bassist, and a gifted musician on many levels.
    Sting - His bass lines just seem to create such awesome moods.

    Some great bassists...I could only add:

    John Myung of Dream Theater;
    Billy Sheehan (David Lee Roth, Mr. Big, Niacin, Talas...)

    Also, my best friend plays bass, and we both jump at the chance to gig together. We first met when he was brought into a band I was in 20 years ago. Playing-wise, we clicked immediately. Lot of fun to play with someone like that.

    Ryan Martinie from mudvayne - ive listened to mudvayne since they came out with the beginning of all things to end. Ryan Martinie is a crazy bassist, and i love the drummer, Matt Mcdonough. Incredible composer, and he can only do that kind of stuff cuz he works with ryan, till there recent stuff im not too thrilled about, lol.
    And Victor Wooten for quite obvious reason lol. So good.

    That's a pretty formidable list. Not so much in a "straight-ahead style" (although he can do it) but have you heard Mick Hutton doing acoustic bass in the earlier days of Bill Bruford's Earthworks?

    Drmn4life, believe it or not I also sat down down and listened to the "LD.50" album (did I spell that one correct) probably about 7-8 years ago or so when I was lent that album from this guy Brad, when I was doing my music course. Though we're like a generation apart at that time, I think we pretty much fanboys of any style being legit so long it was played well, so as he was lending me his metal stuff I was helping him out with the prog and jazz stuff I was listening to at the time, which in turn what was helping him out with studying basslines and so forth. LD.50 would still go on my car's player every now and then, that's an awesome album.

    There are more technically capable bassist out there but these guys know how to lay it down and that's whats most important to me. Busy bass playing becomes annoying after awhile just as playing constant 32nd note runs and constant dbl bass, cymabls everywhere on drums.
