The Mapex Horizon kit is a decent kit to start out on. I use one for my lessons at the music store, and I certainly don't cring when I play it. Replacing the stock heads will help the snare a lot, and the cymbals will need to be upgraded, but I have also heard worse cymbals.

I agree with PB, The Horizons are pretty good kits, Mapex is a great company, but maybe look into a used M Birch or Pro M. (I love my M birch) and a slightly higher kit will last quite a bit longer for him.

Wuhan cymbals are great, but they do have a rep for breaking. Maybe a whole used setup would be ideal. But i know that some people refuse to by used...

Xs20's and Alpha's are great. and companies like Dream are cheaper but have better reps in the cracking department.

The horizons are Mapex's new series of student level kits, they come in two different flavors. The HX version has basswood shells, and the HZB has basswood/birch shells which makes them competitive with pearl export and tama rockstars. From what i've heard of them, they are priced around 500-700usd so you might be better off going with a Meridian- but they do sound and look better than you'd expect from kits in this range.
