Hells Bells had a video in an earlyer thread somewhere that explainde things quite well. Also, try loosening your pedal.
Hi group,
Can someone properly explain the heel toe method to me.
I just slam away using what I guess is 'heel up' method but I keep hearing about this 'fast' heel toe method.
I have tried what I think is it and I feel like an absloutely un-cordinated goose when I do attempt it- whats the secret?
Cheers

Heel Toe by Derrick Pope
This video explains the heel toe method very thoroughly IMO.
A lot of it has more to do with how your pedal is set up than your action. At the moment, I have a Pearl Pedal which I can Heel Toe fine on, and a lower quality Sonic Drive Pedal, which I can't do it on.
Try some different set ups. What works for me, may not work for you. But my set up is fairly tight springs (about 3/4 tension) and a slight backward angle on the spring that moves the beater further away from the head and increases the pedal angle.

Yeah. Did you see the "nervious spasm" method on youtube. I do that i just find it hard to control and time this seems much better but people keep saying there is a faster way to double kick. I think thats the best one i ever seen.

is that the side to side technique with another name? i find at the higher speeds my feet are starting to move side to side pivoting on my toes.Originally Posted by Stevo42w
Im not sure what the other name is... The guy on the video just described it as "that spasming motion you get when your nervous"

ok..have you got a link?
and that link i was going to post was the same one that HB58 posted with Derrick Pope
I believe you're referring to a technique known as the "swivel-foot" technique. George Kollias (Nile) uses this technique to get incredible speeds. If theres a person who's mastered this technique, it would be him. He can do Blast beats with a single foot.
Tim Waterson describes the action as though you were stomping out a cigarette, moving side to side with your foot.

The nervious spasm method isn't the swivel technique. It's another one explained here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbhAe...related&search=
The actual name of the technique is the flat foot technique.

Oh, interesting.
I looked at a few videos on the Tube. Looks like an interesting method I'll have to try.

Very cool, I like this (heel toe method)..... Although I have to put shoes on to do it or I hurt my toesies LOL
I tried the flat foot technique this morning and it felt very comfortable. It also felt alot more natural than the heel toe technique for me personally.
I noticed I could play higher speeds alot more comfortablty too with the flat foot technique. I also had to drop my throne a notch to adapt to the change.
yea hellsbells58, Kollis is pretty crazy huh? lol when i first saw that clip it opened my mind, its cool that theres not only one way of getting real fast at double pedal.
and im not saying heal toe is the best, but the man with the fastest hits on a bass drum uses heal to to achieve those 1200+ hits on the bass drum in 60 secs.
Different strokes for different folks.

i am trying different techniques and I think practicing all different techniques certainly helps development. Although I know that in time there will be only one unique technique for me which I will stick too as that feels the most comfortable.
Good stuff Livewire. At least if you practice all the techniques, you'll find something that works for you. Instead of forcing yourself to play one way.
And there's a million different ways to play the kickers.
