Hey everyone I just recently ordered a 6.5x14 Ludwig black magic snare. I did some research and since I could not afford a black beauty I opted for the next best thing (I hope). I play rock/alternative (ie Glassjaw, Deftones, Ect) anyone have any suggestions on different snares and snare head combos I can indulge in? I also have a DW Collectors series Maple 6.5x14. The Black Magic will be my first metal snare ever so any suggestions would be extremely helpful. Thanks everyone.

Play with what you get before you try to improve on what works.

thanks everyone for the input. I want out of my snare a good initial crack and a mild fuzz behind not too overbearing of a fuzz which I know that metal snares can easily get. I got the nickel over brass black magic and I heard that the 6.5x14 gets a lot more "buzz" than the 5.5x14 that is why I opted for the more "classic" size of 6.5x14. I've heard of moon gelling to keep the fuzz down but I felt that any dampening like that would not do the drum justice. What is the difference in sound from the stainless steel and the Nickel over brass?

Interesting question - you bought a specific size of a specific drum based on reading and research, but you don't know what heads to use?

I'm a fan of single ply, coated heads on snares - sometimes I'll do a control center or reverse dot - usually an Evans G1 if I'm going to do that. Otherwise, I'm a huge fan of the single ply Aquarian texture coated head. Keeps it simple, offers a phat, open sound with good snare response, and is easy to control - if you want it a bit drier, add a piece of moon gel. I've found that you can even adjust that depending on where it's place.

As for snare side heads, given the choice, I prefer the Evans Hazy 300 snare side over the Remo Ambassador snare side, and I like Puresound Blasters wires - solid performance, moderate price, and it keeps things simple. I don't like Aquarian snare side heads though - they just don't seem to be lively enough for me.
