Does anyone have any good or practical ideas for using old drum heads?
I have about 10 old drum heads, and I've heard of people using the heads for studio muffling rings. Do you guys know of any other good uses?

I use some for sorting small screws, lugs, washers and other stuff that I just can't decide what to do with. I found a guitar capo in one last week.

You can cut em up and put them on heads for a new head or a studio ring, just remember that when you adhere something to the shell like that it must lay perfectly flat or else there is air created that inhibits your tone. One thing you could do is use them for a painting canvas, and later hang them on your wall for decoration.

great ideas...I too use them as wall decorations absent " using it as a paint canvas" idea from RUSS. ( which I now will consider ) Might add....a steel shell with one head removed and filled with ice maked a decorative table top cooler. This is an interesting thread --- confirming and revealing the creative and resourceful mind of a drummer.

I saw a suggestion in Modern Drummer at one time which said if you have old bass drum skins, you can cut two semicircles out of the skin (not including the metal ring) and lay them flat on your car's windscreen in winter. That way, when you get up, you won't have to get all the frost and ice first thing in the morning, you can just take them off and have a clear windscreen, saves time when you tend to be in a hurry at the start of a busy day and won't have the time to clean your windscreen Sounds like a good dea for me, although it doesn't snow my way, lol.

I usually find someone younger and poorer than me, who doesn't change heads as often, whose drumhead surface looks like bacon, and they gladly take them. But yeah, I hate to throw them out.

I've cut an old drum head into strips before and used it to fasten my snares on my snare drum.

I store them in my basement. I'm not sure why really, I just have sets of clear G2's, coated G2's, coated G-Plus's, and clear EC2's laying around, as well as various snare heads and the occasional kick drum head. I really should find something to do with them, or just throw them away.

Though occasionally, they are fun just to throw on certain drums and see the different sonic qualities of different heads

I guess it couldn't hurt to have a couple of used heads that aren't in terrible condition for desperate measures when a head breaks or something else comes up.
I will bring a few to my school's drum set with me as well.
