I had similar thoughts when Matt Cameron briefly did studio work for the Smashing Pumpkins. I respect Matt Walker, Chamberlin's initial replacement, and consider Chamberlin to be perhaps my most prominent influence.
When I listed to "For Martha" on Adore I thought it was one of the most tasteful, elegant rock parts I had ever heard.
From a chops standpoint, I think Chamberlin trounces Cameron. I've been fortunate to see both live, Chamberlin four times. Cameron is more groove, with an occassional odd-time punch. His flourishes are far fewer, but their placement is, again, in my opinion, tasteful. I would have liked to see Cameron on all of Adore.
