Re: Shoulder of the Stick vs. the Tip on a Hi-Hat
Just make you hold the stick correctly or it will come flying out of your hand when you do decide to hit the hi-hat,(my first month of drumming).

Re: Shoulder of the Stick vs. the Tip on a Hi-Hat
No right or wrong. Just different techniques used in order to achieve the desired results. To get a sloshy constant sound that is used a lot, you would use the shoulder with relaxed pedal pressure, right? To get a more articulate chicking sound used in conjunction with the squelching of your hats usually, you would use the tips more often then.

Re: Shoulder of the Stick vs. the Tip on a Hi-Hat
I usually use the shoulder in 'general' playing, but use the tip on top of the hats when playing quieter. Also, when I reach certain speeds, about 240 or above, I can only really play using "French Grip" or the 'Flying Fingers' technique, which requires me to play on the top of the hats with the tip to do so comfortably.

Just depends on the colour and the sound you want to express.
