I thought that fusion sets had more depth rather than width?

FYI The Catalina Elite line is a mahognay shell. From their site:

"Catalina Elite drums feature 6-ply mahogany shells in UV lacquer finishes and a 45-degree bearing edge for enhanced attack and projection."

    Great drums none the less

Actually, the width of the drums is usually smaller on a fusion kit. The typical standard set up for the toms is 12" and 13" rides with a 16" floor. The typical tom widths for a fusion kit is 10" and 12" rides with a 14" floor. The shells on the fusion set are also typically shorter.

Mine is a 100% birch shell. They'd just been discontinued about a year before I had bought it which is why I could get such a good deal I assume.

    Hi

The Catalina Birch line replaced the Elites & Stage series and if your kit is Birch you must have a prototype to the Birch line. Must have been a short run of these. When did you get them? The Catalina Birch series was discontinued a year ago and in my opinion a very pour move on the part of Gretsch. My birch kit just sings with tone. As for the Elites, Gretsch made two series of these drums, Elites & Stage. Both were made of 6-ply mahogany. The Elite line had the lacquer finish and the Stage had a wrap finish. To learn more go to http://www.gretschdrums.com/index.cfm?fa=archive and check it out.

I bought mine October last year, but they were used by an owner of 5 years. I like the way they sound, and they're still making the floor toms, so it's all good lol.

Yea my Catalina Birch kit has been in my arsenal for three years and you are right by saying it is all good. Gretsch make a great kit at any level. Enjoy your drums.

Those are, from left to right:

14" Paiste Alpha Sound Edge hihats
    16" Paiste Alpha thin crash
    14" Paiste Alpha medium crash
    18" Paiste Alpha medium ride
    16" Paiste 802 medium crash
    14" Paiste Alpha china
    12" Paiste 802 splash
    20" Paiste Alpha medium ride

As you can tell, I'm a Paiste guy. Soon to be added to the mix will be a 16" Paiste Twenty Series crash and a 17" Paiste 2002 thin crash. Almost have enough for the 17", the 16" will be close behind. Should have them within the next few weeks.

It soudns great, I havent really done anything with it, I want to learn some of that african drum music.
1DB, I had a chance to play one while I was hangin' out at a Guitar Center during the great job search...sounds just like the full-size conga (and they had a similar compact bongo set alongside which I also played)...if you haven't played 'em, they'd be worth a look (especially for a gig in a really small playing space!)

I've seen them there, but have never gotten a chance to play with them. I always thought it would be cool to have a set to play with. I'll have to take a whack (or 1000) at them next time I go in.
