There is an LP video somewhere with Stanton Moore demonstrating his signature Pandeiro, and at the end there was a great brush segment. I don't remember what the video was, but I think it was at NAMM or PASIC if you look through LP's videos...
So I've seen various acoustic groups use a handhelds drum and brushes but I haven't been able to find anything on youtube besides either regular snare drum or the cajone. I'm wondering if one would just take regular drumming techniques and adapt it or if it'd be a different ball of wax. Any examples on line would be awesome.

Thanks!
I'm playing brushes and hot rods on a djembe pretty regularly now. Started another band project and the kit for it is 22"x18" bass drum, 14" tom, 14" djembe, and a 10"x6" side snare. I was using my hand strung djembe at first, but decided that if the head couldn't handle it, it was a lot of work to replace it, so I switched to a Remo Djembe with a synthetic head and quick tuning. I put it right in front of me and play it like a snare. It is a lot of fun and really changes the feel of a song. Just make sure you use nylon brushes so you don't damage the head of a hand percussion drum. I don't have any video yet, but will post it as soon as I do.

I normally don't do brush work on hand drums, but I've tried them on bongos and djembe and they work very nicely (and a darn sight better than sticks, which to me is a bit of overkill)!

Also- Try LP one shot finger shakers. You have cajon snare sound.

Here I am playing a kanjira drum from India, with brushes. No doubt traditional Indian kanjira players would frown on this, and maybe karma will get me for trying it.

Nuthin' fancy... just comping along with my troubadour friend Frank J.
Kanjira is a neat little drum ... fish skin head, and a single tambourine jingle in the frame. Use a little bit of water on the head to get it to the desired pitch.

I've never expiremented with brushes not on regular drums. I'll have to try some now
When I play a drum with brushes (which is almost 100% in the bluegrass band), I really feel as though the brushes are the instrument, and whatever drum is more or less just an amplifier. I prefer Vater Wire-Taps (metal) and Vater Poly-Flex (nylon). Both are wood-handled. I'll frequently play with one of each.
I use the retractable style brushes on my washboard, for a poor-man's snare drum sound. Flip them around and us the wire loops for the zydeco sound. Or mix and match: left hand brush, right hand loop.
