Default Wood or metal hoops on bass drum

Which would you prefer for bass drum hoops wood or metal? After looking at some small kits at gc I notice that some had wood hoops. Sonor safari kit had metal and looked nicer than the sonor bop kit which had wood. I really liked both kits but the sonor safari didn't come with a riser. I looked at musiciansfriend.com and both of the sonor safari and bop kits come with both wood or metal. I'm not sure if it really makes the difference.

    Keep drumming

I have an old Sonor Jungle kit with metal hoops. I would prefer wood hoops as they look cooler - Sonor claim they make them sound 'warmer' but this may be a sales pitch.
Does this affect the clearance for the kick pedal? - wood ones will be considerably wider?

Try clamping a drum pedal to the raw metal hoop.

I used to have metal hoops on my old swingstars. Never had problem with pedals. Sound I dont think you'd hear a difference.

The late, great Nashville recording drummer, Tommy Wells, used to swear by metal BD hoops. You've almost certainly heard his drums on recordings over the years. The stigma against metal hoops typically is because they come on less expensive kits. As far as the pedal goes, they make a rubber block that sticks to the inside of the hoop to give the pedal a place to grab.

I like the look of wood hoops, but I've never had any issues with metal ones. I think there is an advantage in terms of strength. Seems to me, if your bass is tuned for a dull "thud", the difference in sound would be negligible.
My Tama pedal (Powerglide) has a plastic block on the top of the clamp that fits perfectly into the recessed groove on a metal hoop. It works better on metal hoops than on a smooth wood hoop.

    Play the SONG......not the DRUMS!!!

"I think that feeling is a lot more important than technique. It's all very well doing a triple paradiddle - but who's going to know you've done it? If you play technically you sound like everybody else. It's being original that counts." ~ John Bonham

What about using die cast or triple flange hoops on bass drums?

Plusses? Minuses? Anyone ever done that?

I'm assuming that the "metal BD hoops" referred to in this thread are the flat metal ones that are pretty much made to the same specs as the traditional wooden hoops.

I don't think they make die cast that big.

I think I've only ever come across a metal BD hoop on beginner kits. All kits I've played have only ever had wood hoops.

I used to have metal hoops on my Tama kit in the late eighties..............never really noticed a difference.

Every kit I've owned since then has had wood hoops....................except for a Tama bop kit I had for a short while.............they were some type of composite material....................seemed to work well also
