Thread: Where are your drums?

    Default Where are your drums?

I've been experimenting with setting up my kit in different parts of a room. I now set them up against the wall. The kick has a lot more low end, and it has a shorter punch. The drums sound smaller and almost muffled. Where do you set up your drums?

My drums are set up against the wall too. I feel like it really muffles the sound of my kick drum though. I like the sound of my drums best when I set them up outside.

A few years ago I did an experiment where I took my snare drum into every room in my house (including the garage and the backyard) and played it for a few minutes to see what sounded the best. Back then I was living with my parents, and if I remember correctly, the best sound was in my parents' bedroom lol. The worst sound was in the bathroom.

My practice kit is in a spare bedroom facing a window. I lucked out, they sound great in there.

    Basement up against the wall.

We had a sick animal in our basement a month or so ago, and I set my drums up in the living room. Big, open room, 12-foot ceilings, and hardwood floors. I sounded like the god of thunder. It was awesome.

They are back in the basement again though...

Mine are backed into the corner of my 9x11 studio (spare bedroom)---I like to face the rest of the band when we practice---I also have a kit set up outside on the back porch for my weekly open jams---having the kick against the wall sounds like crap :(

    In my trunk... Haha!

Sadly I don't get to leave them set up at home ever, but most of the time if I'm not using them with them in my trunk, they're set up in a studio about 6 feet from the closest wall. I do like how they sound there.

They're in a room I designed just for them. Facing away from a wall, slightly angled out. Sound great in there.

I actually like the sound of it against the wall. But I guess it depends on the person and what sound you're looking for.

Mine are in my music room, an 11'x18' bedroom. The high hat is next to the wall, and the bass drum faces the front window. The rest of the room (to the right of the kit, the remainder of the 18' dimension of the room) is filled with other musical equipment. I think the kit sounds pretty good! I know the doggies next door think so. They always howl when I play

Very nice kit. I used to have my drums in the middle of the room. I decided it was time for something different so I set them up against the wall. Huge difference in sound.

Sound is a wave. When you put the drums up against a wall that wave has nowhere to go. In the case of your if its right against the wall or within a couple of inches, the wave wont even have room to develop.

We have one bedroom in the house on the second floor that is now my "drumroom", which consists of my digital drumset (Roland TD9) set up, and my Mapex Saturn and drumrack stacked away in drumbags (ready to gig). My other two drumkits, plus hardware and cymbals, are setup at my two band's rehearsal places, one hour drive from where I live.

    Hi,
because of space, I am backed to the window, facing the fireplace!
The room is fairly small so I sound loud. And I have a mirror ( my tutor said to do it) so I can see myself playing, not because I am a poser! but it is supposed to help you improve your playing style, he said!

My electronic kits are set up in the teaching space that I have, which is a walled-off section of a garage (essentially the workshop section, which is a combination of teaching room, office space, workbench area and lounge space). I also have the big marimba and vibraphone in there for practice and teaching on. And no need to worry about annoying neighbours.....it's a securely locked garage at the bottom of the yard, well away from neighbours on either side, and the back area faces the back area of the local schools playing fields. Naturally I'm there most nights finishing late!

With my back nearly against one wall of a 10' x 10' spare bedroom. I like to have good rebound off my toms, so I tune the batter past medium high, reso half that, and use Evans muting rings to control the overtones.
