Hey there, newbie here, hope you don't mind my two cents. I have pretty much always played Remo. As a kid/teenager I tried Evans ( I do love coated G2's on toms), Aquarian and Attack. I can't lie, they all sound great. I've just always gone back to Remo, coated Emperor on toms with coated ambassador reso, Snare gets coated emperor or emperor x with ambassador hazy on snare side...but I do pretty much always use an Evans Emad on my kick.
My main (studio) kit has Emperors over Ambassadors (all Black Suede) on the toms, Black X over Black Suede snare side, Powerstroke 3 (Black Suede) with center ported Flame Graphic reso on the kick. My second kit is set up with Black Suede Ambassadors over clear Diplomats, Black suede Emperor over hazy snare side, Evans Emad2 with unported generic black reso.
Another vote for coated Ambassadors batter heads over clear Ambassador resonant heads on toms. I like coated ambassadors as snare batters as well. I have a COB Gretsch 4160 that is a bit ring-y with an ambassador, I have a coated Pinstripe on it and it tames it just enough.
I use this setup on my Gretsch USA Customs, Vintage Leedy and Vintage Gretsch kits. I like the (Remo made) DW heads on my DW Collector series better than Ambassadors.

"I wish that my playing reminded people of Steve Gadd. But they seem to confuse me with his little known cousin... E."
"Snare drums happen."
I have Renaissance batter and snare side heads on my ****tail kit and I love them. The bass batter is a 14" Remo Powermax 2 marching bass drum head. I like Remo a lot, but I'm not exclusively brand loyal.
