Default Sultans of Swing by Dire Straights

I happened to hear this tune again on the way to work this morning. I believe the drummer on that track was Pick Withers. I've always really liked the sound of the ride and hats in that song, but could never figure out what he used. The ride used on that song has always had the perfect "glass" sound to my ears but I can not for the life of me identify what it is. Perhaps some studio magic?

If anyone has an answer for me, I'd sure appreciate it.

    Thanks guys.

Oh cool! Ya, I poked around his website, but I couldn't find what I was looking for. Guess I must be blind or something.

I went to Paiste's website. It almost sounds like the 24" medium ride. It's kind of the sound I'm looking for in a ride.

Oh ya, I agree. You do realize though that Boston did a lot of post production work to their sound though, right?

Pretty sure they all did............even back in the 70's

Not even close to today's "produced" sounds though.

To me, it still stands out as "the" ride cymbal sound.

I always liked the ride in Radar Love. Don't know the drummers name or what he used but I remember putting on my brothers headphones one day and that song came on radios one and only KZAP. Does KZAP ring a bell Mark?.

Doesn't ring a bell with me because it was a local Sacramento radio station that ran from 1968 to 1992. I've only been out here in Cali for eight years.

As far as the song Radar Love is concerned, Golden Earring went through several drummers in their time. It's hard to say which one it was. You're right though, the ride used in that song was great!

He used 602's, 2002's, and Sound Creations Paiste cymbals and Eddie Ryan drums when he was with Dire Straits.

I've mentioned Pick Withers several times over the last couple of years. When they talk about drummers that go unnoticed, Pick has to be at the top of the list.

The drummer was Cesar Zuiderwijk, he became a member of Golden Earring in 1970 - and still is after 45 years. Considered one of the best Dutch drummers (ever).
No idea what drums or cymbals he used on Rader Love. The song is a classic, also for drum teaching.
