Thought you guys would find this interesting. Rush's first Tom Sawyer performance. Different lyrics and drumming.

Listen to Neil's drumming at 3:36. Probably the only Neil Peart mistake I've ever heard, very cool! The tempo is wonky too. Alex's solo half way through the song is interesting.

Wow is all I can say. Loved hearing this. It's amazing how songs evolve over time.

I just noticed Geddy says mean mean pride instead of mean mean stride first. In the recording, it's the other way around.

    Oh, my !
He got distracted for a few seconds.
Likely confirmation on just how new that song was that night.

John Rutsey was the original drummer. He left RUSH due to health problems.

Neil was all over the place with tempo. We all have bad performances from time to time...even Neil

WOW....It always amazes me at how a good studio can make you sound so much better than you really are. Don't get me wrong I know this is not the norm for these guys and they are all really great players but in the same vain what you hear on the album is not the norm either.

Rutsey left the band in '74. Tom Sawyer was released in 1981

Yeah I've heard some recordings and some nights I look back and say what was going on... why is my tempo so off.

I can tell it's Neil just by the way he plays. The hi hat beat at the beginning is very distinct.

Oh most definitely. Rutsey sounded completely different. Neil seems a bit more technical in his drumming style.

But like all good drummers he pulled it together and got back in the groove. Thanks for posting this.

That was really fun to listen to. I wonder how long it took them to get the song to totally gel.

And why did they play out before it "gelled?"
