In my late teens I started getting more into rock/heavier music. Specifically, I think it was Green Day that made me realise how awesome it would be to start the drums. I'd be constantly tapping/drumming my fingers on the steering wheel while I was driving, or I'd be at home with my music and pretending to play the drums on my bed with chopsticks! Haha. It's like the drums were calling! I wanted to be part of music in a way that allowed me to express myself. Best thing I've ever done.

Bar A (early '80's), Stone Pony, good gig but could have used more room. That place had more owners than any 1 place I've ever seen. We were booked there in the late '80's or early '90's. We got a call from our management that said the gig was off because they closed and filed for bankruptcy.

The Playboy club which became the Atlantis, The Sands, and I'm still trying to remember where the Safari was (not the 1 in Edgewater).

I remember a couple of bar/clubs around Aberdeen that turned into strip clubs. 1 owner told me that the bands were costing him too much. That was around 30 years ago. If he's still open, I wonder how he feels about paying $1,500 a night for a dancer doing 2 shows, and if he gets a "name", it's around $2,500 for 1 20 minute show.

Times have changed down the shore since the '60's and '70's.

1982, My older bro got me the KISS album "Creatures of the Night" for xmas. Eric Carr's drums were soooooo huge sounding on that album. The drums on "I Love It Loud" and "War Machine" are so big and epic, like Zep's "When the Levee Breaks"

Ironically enough, the power balled on this album is what really did me in. There's a great staccato during the guitar solo and I can remember my mom catching me air drumming to it in my room.

My father (an excellent tenor banjo player), taught me how to play the spoons when I was a kid. I have had percussion fever ever since, even though I focused mostly on other instruments over the last 40 years (trombone, bass, banjo, accordion, balalaika, harmonica, etc.). My current band is the first band I've ever been in as the full-time percussionist [including spoons]. This forum has been very helpful to me, in this rather late-in-life musical turnabout.

From an early age I was always banging out rhythm on table tops, washing machine tops, school desks, if I could get a sound out of it, I played it. Then one day, I was either 9 or 10. Yrs old I saw the gene Krupa story starring sal mineo. I new at that moment drumming was some how going to be part of my life. I new nothing about drumming, didn't know any famous drummers or people that played drums. I went to the library and took out the gene Krupa drum method book and learned it on my own. I became the drummer in my jr high school band also I some times stayed after school and played in a jazz band. I would go home and get on my drums and play led Zeplain songs. All through jr high I took private drum lessons. The drum teacher had me go through the buddy rich book, I said who is this guy buddy rich, never heard of him. He looked at me and said, sooner or later you are going to know who he is. He taught me the buddy rich drum method of playing, totally different than the Krupa method of playing. I take from both methods when I play.

Are you talking the Rainbow Lounge or Rainbow Room? The other places don't sound familiar but that doesn't mean anything with my memory of places 40+ years ago.

    How about Asbury Lanes?

Once the casinos opened, Wildwood and other places started going downhill. Nobody wanted to go to Asbury Park unless their bus was taking them straight to the Casinos.

Watching and listening to my brothers marching band drum corp (he played sax) got me liking drums. Later I bought my first record Foghat Live. That along with a testosterone level that was off the charts pretty much cemented the whole thing
