    Hey all, DH too,
My son graduated from HS this year & I promised him a gift.... He chose a set of Tama Silverstar Mirage acrylic kit. Our household has at least 5 kits mostly Gretsch. Being an old school guy liking maple & birch, were these a good investment? They sound ok...

If it gets your son to play more I would say yes . I've played those kits too and I agree..they're ok . If it gets him a gig and more pay for it I would say yes . They do look cool on stage with the lights and all . But if you mean will you get back the money you payed for it...maybe not .
Still tho...good on ya for taking care of your boy ! You'd be surprised at how many fathers don't .

It's not going to hold value like a vintage vistalite kit, but it's certainly not a bad kit. It should handle elemental factors well and look great on stage. If it inspires him to play, it can't be a bad thing. He may come to appreciate those Gretsch kits as he ages. I know that my tastes have evolved since I was 18. That said, they're still going to look cool when he's 35.

If your house becomes infested with termites, it will be the best investment you ever made!

Seriously though, if it's what he wanted, then the investment was in your son, not the drums. Even if he decides he doesn't like them 5yrs from now, it will be a valuable step on his journey as a musician. He will have developed his own personal taste. Every kid should have a chance to enjoy a sports car when they're young; it helps them appreciate the versatility of a mini van when they grow up!

    Play the SONG......not the DRUMS!!!

"I think that feeling is a lot more important than technique. It's all very well doing a triple paradiddle - but who's going to know you've done it? If you play technically you sound like everybody else. It's being original that counts." ~ John Bonham

Mike Portnoy had a tama acrylic kit when he was with Dream Theater. He said that they werr mainly a visual thing. They look amazing, but they sound ok.

Acrylic is loud, but a close sonic relative of birch. The shell is different, but the sound of these types of drums are nearly identical. To my ears anyway. I'd say if you're a fan of birch, this will be a good experience for you, and something you may end up growing on.

Give him what HE wants, this way he won't be disappointed and he will probably excel faster.

I love the Acrylic kits. But they are almost more novelty then anything else. But some of the new ones on the market are just awesome.

Will it ever sound as good as wood? Of course not. But will it sound good.. yes.

The question "are they a good investment" - quite honestly, if you are considering future resale value, in the short term, they will be just the same as any other brand of drums. After a short period they will probably sell for about 60% of the price you paid if they are kept in good condition, considerably less if they are tatty or damaged.

On the positive side, I believe acrylic drums will always be in demand because of their looks and the fact there are not many available - also I believe the prices, unlike 'normal' drums, will not drop below this level over the years once they have reached their (60%?) used value, if anything they will realise more than this. From this point of view - yes they are a good long term investment. And they are pretty.

the only used kits i see of a good value are the old vistalite kits, but like a few have said if it inspires him to play that's great.

Make sure you keep it away from direct heat sources, like furnaces or fireplaces. Unless you enjoy the look and smell of burning, melting plastic. Difficult to get out of floors once it sets like that.

I lost a 7 piece red vistalite in a house fire, one large red puddle with various pieces of metal in it, was a very sad day.

I've heard some pretty good things about Pearl crystal beats. Watched a few videos and they sound awesome. Little pricey though.
