Vic Firth 5A wood. I would use nylon outdoors, though.

I like the Vic Firth 7A. I don't need to beat on my drums like a gov't mule.
(Although they're one of my favorite bands...)

For years, I would never use anything other than a 7A sized stick with a nylon tip. I liked the feel and the tip, like others have noted, sounds great on the ride. A couple of years ago, I switched to a HHX 21" Dry Ride and have found that I like the sound just as much with wood tips.
I joined a new band a 2-3 years ago and found I was going through sticks like they were made of glass - 2-3 sets per gig! This seemed rather odd given I'd never go through that quatity in the past. As such, I started to look at alternatives the VF 7A nylons I was running. I thought that moving up a size would help. So, I got a few 5A nylons and whilst they held up a little better I was finding that when I broke one it would completely snap for some reason but I liked the feel of the 5A. As I had found that the ride sounded good (to my ears) with a wood tip, I thought I'd try the 5A's with wood tips instead. Bingo! I think the added longevity is to do with the slightly thicker shoulder on the wood tips compared to the nylon which has to taper to a thinner diameter to accommodate the nylon tips.
Overall, factors for choosing a stick are comfort, feel, sound and durability in that order.

^yeah switching from Nylon to wood tip I've found better longevity for sure.
