This video was why my band started doing this song, the way they do it. Awesome.

One of my favorite covers has no drums, only piano. The original has percussion. I absolutely hate the original from Tears for Fears. Gary Jules version, best known from the movie Donnie Darko, became part of my band's acoustic "suicide set".

And I've always loved Crosby Stills, Nash and Young's version of Dear Mr. Fantasy. Stephen Still's guitar work is haunting.

One of my favorite punk bands the Damned use to do a parody of Gary Newman's "Cars" except they called it "Gay bars".. I only time I heard it was on some radio interview with Rat Scabies..But it was pretty funny. I always did like Dave Vanian's croaning..sort of like a Gothic vampire Frank Sinatra lol.

Two of Jimi's most famous songs where watchtower and hey joe, he liked to do sunshine of your love live a lot too. CCR's also did a bunch of good covers, especially midnight special. Lately, I really like Jack White's version of Love is Blindness...which leads me to this idea of hijacking the thread:

Which cover versions are just way better than the original (e.g. Love is Blindness, Watchtower) and which are some just really bad covers done by otherwise good musicians. Let's disqualify covers that are mostly the same as the original (like NiN's Cars above).
I totally agree..I thought it was lame as well. Their not adding anything to the song..just being a parrot really..I did like Reznor's Immigrant song..but yeah give me Ministry's just one fix anyday...

The Jules version is an interesting case, because it defo fits the lyrics better than the original, i mean, with the lyrics, "The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had" you'd expect something slow, not up beat like Tears for Fears.

I would also say the Sid Viscious version of My Way is pretty cool too, although I'm not into punk very much (this song makes me believe you can make a punk version of any song)

we do a few cover of covers, so our version of spoonful swings a bit more and I add a ruff on the downbeat and a few more notes in general in the pattern (I think I'm partially channeling the "Hey Song" from marching band days) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JMKUjtUcmY

WE also do this version of Jolene, but of course even I can make the drums more interesting and we give it more edge in general (i mean, it's the white stripes, not hard to do ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kS60oTRxh0g

otherwise, we don;t break much ground musically with our covers...
