Must admit I'm not exactly in love with the sound of cowbells or chinas, but if you ride 8th notes on a china, quarters on the cowbell and have metronome running on sixteenths in the background they're wonderful.
The trick is to have the metronome just audible for that extra 'something'
I think someone should ride the china back to China. The cowbell should be put back on the cow. The quarters should be given to the person taking the china to China to cover tolls.
The metronome should be in the background. Somewhere like Malaysia would suffice.
The extra something, for me, would be a 2nd glass of scotch.
If I were playing it, I would make crap sound like a viable alternative.

All good suggestions.
I don't think that's a cowbell in "All Right Now" by Free. Sounds like claves to me.
Check out the live version of "You Fool No One" by Deep Purple (1976's Made in Europe album)! Now there's some friggin' cowbell!

Well how about this :
I prefer a cowbell attached to drum kit, and used creatively by a drummer .... rather than a cowbell (or tambourine or maracas), in the hands of the "lead singer", just so they don't feel or appear superfluous to the band during extended guitar solos or instrumental numbers.

the thing about a cowbell you really really have to try a bunch of them to find one you like the sound of most. I have like 10 cowbells and some are awesome and some not so much. I've also put tape inside and underneath my main cowbell to help deaden the sound.
Claves are those two rosewood sticks you click together to make those high-pitched 1/4 note sounds you're hearing on All Right Now..
