Which heads do you prefer better and did they give you a more open sound.
Replaced my year old Evans coated G2's with new, Remo coated, Ambassadore X's on my Yamaha Tour Custom maples today. Remo's are a little thinner (12 ml. vs 2x7ml. or 14 ml.) so I hoped they would open up the Yamahas' sound. Also I want to see how long the coating lasts. I practice with them for a month, every other month and gig with them maybe 4 x /yr. The Evans still looked good but, once removed and hit with a stick, they had no tone. I guess their usefulness was really at an end! I did switch the 16" FT reso(original Yamaha/Remo clear) with a new Evans clear G2 I had on hand which shortened the FT resonance a little. It's still a big, booming thing!
FYI: using the Drum Dial for quicker tuning, I found the Remos' numbers matched the Evans'. And found the 10" more difficult to tune to my liking than the 12."
Anybody else use the Ambassadore X's? How long does the coating last?

I am using coated amb. on my Beech kit for over a year now and probably 20 gigs and they are still holding up although honestly I have not closely examined them in a while.
I been looking hard at the amb. X's or the Vintage A's for my next head swap. I have never had a problem with coating not lasting long enough on any head yet.

Spider, they do sound more open- still trying things to the FT(it's really too open for me!) So far I like the Ambo-X's.

My only experience with the Amb-X is on a maple snare. Made it ring like crazy. Did you experience that or was it just my drum or my tuning?

Try a vintage Emperor on that FT. Or bite the bullet and go PS3. The vintage Emp is slightly thicker than the standard Emp and G2, so a slightly "warmer", shorter note.

other developments: while retuning the 10" I found one tension rod of the 6 could actually be removed and not change the tuning! Swapped tension rods made no dif. I didn't have this happen with the Evans head...tempted to replace it with the worn out Evans!
(this drum never stays in tune, I noticed, even with added vaseline on the rods. I'm always tightening 2 rods after 15-20 min. of playing, something I don't have to do with my Sonor 10")
Sundog, PS3's don't come in 16". Maybe X14?
Right now I'm toying with swapping lugs from reso side to batter side. Reso rods don't seem to have a problem...

I used the Ambassador X on my snares for quite some time...absolutely love them! You're right about the coating, though. It does seem to chip a bit sooner than I'd like to see. I've just switched over to the coated Control Sound X head for my snare. It's the same 12 mil thickness as the Ambassador X but with an added 5 mil reverse dot. So far, the coating seems far more durable. You may want to give one a try next time.

little update: swapped 3 batter rods with reso tension rods seems to be working but the 10" head's coating is starting to come off. This after three days of use? Cr@#%%!p!
As I stated earlier, the Evans 360's they replaced hardly showed any wear.

Sling................
It has been my experience with various snare batter heads that the Remo coating does not last as long as others.
I have discovered that the Aquarian Super 2 lasts the longest.............I have not tried thinner Aquarian heads.

wow 3 days?, I know evan's last longer and all that but 3 days seems ridiculous. You may have gotten a bad one. I like evan's and aquarian head but to me Remo always sounds a little fuller, Just a matter of choice I guess. Contact Remo and show them pic and I bet they send you a new one.

Okay I have to know. What are you guys doing to make the coating come off. All of my snare heads are coated Ambassador or coated PS3 and I never, ever experience this, oh and by the way, I hit hard. I alternate with toms/floors, sometimes clear and sometimes coated, and again, I've never experienced this. So my question is, what the hell are you doing to make this happen.
