Not really sure of the specific question...
But to my knowledge I'm gonna say Buddy Rich.

    Ahhh...
Hmmm well it's hard to say. IMO it would be almost impossible to master drumming in 10 or 20 years. If I had any say it would be Joey Jordison, but he wasn't over 40 when he started playing. Not sure man.

    Au contraire, mon frere!

If I'm reading the question right, paintsticks is looking for dudes and ladies who started drumming and turned pro above age 40.

In the loosest sense of the word, it could include some of our fellow DrumChatters, including you know who...

but as regards Buddy Rich, his first professional appearance was at age 4 ... he was the son of vaudeville performers, and he was known as "Traps, the Drum Wonder." In fact, jazz singer Mel Torme (a/k/a the "Velvet Fog"--and a drummer himself!--has written a book under that very title!)

I think it's too subjective to answer definitively. There have been many.

Paintsticks, first of all, welcome to Drum Chat! Second, I am wondering if you are trying to assess whether you might have a shot at mastering the drums before you're too old!

I'm 52 and started playing drum 7 1/2 months ago. Sure there are frustrating moments as I learn, and the more I learn, then more I realize that I don't don't, but I am taking the long view. I am drumming for the enjoyment, first and foremost. I may not ever "go pro," but I will love playing, and who knows, maybe I'll be good enough to teach a young drummer one day.

    Thomas Lang.
He has mastered coordination to an extreme, no other drummers ever done it like he has. Just google him or youtube.
