It's really just a personal preference thing. I only play matched, apart from that one time I played traditional for laughs at a metal gig.

I guess it depends on the song. I find traditional easier for complicated snare work. My matched grip is French style. I guess that evolved from all the tympani I played back in high school.

I have a question.... What is matchstick grip? Never heard of it.

I use trad grip most of the time (I'm an old marching band dude), and really can't roll with matched. I need to practice it but I'm more interested in spending my practice time on other stuff. I use matched for heavy tom work or rim click/ tom work, and some latin grooves.

One thing I would like to ask Max Weinberg if I ever see him is, when he was on Conan he would use trad sometimes and matched sometimes and I could never figure out what made him choose what.

...And ask Max Weinberg how he can hit his screwed-down-tight cymbals edge-on and not break his sticks!
