Default How far can you hear drums?

Hi, most of us are aware of how loud we are, especially when at home/ rehearsing etc
And do what we can to not annoy our neighbours
I was thinking, if you set your drums up, un-miked, like in a desert or something, how far would they reach?!
Has anyone ever done it, like for a video shoot or something?
How far away do you think we would be heard?

I'm not sure about in the desert, but I know for a fact that over water the sound can carry very far. Even a couple of miles if you hit them hard enough.

    all the best...

Back in my marching days I remember bass drums could carry for almost a mile depending upon weather conditions,(high humidity)

Yep, depends on humidity, landscape, background noise, etc.. Our house is 2-1/2 miles from the High School and I can hear the drum line like its around the corner during Friday night football games. I grew up in the country and we were about 10 miles as the crow flies from the closest railroad tracks. On quiet summer evenings, we could hear the trains very clearly.

In contrast, I can be 3ft away from my 17yr old, and he doesn't hear a word I say....

"Too many crappy used drum stuff to list"

    Play the SONG......not the DRUMS!!!

"I think that feeling is a lot more important than technique. It's all very well doing a triple paradiddle - but who's going to know you've done it? If you play technically you sound like everybody else. It's being original that counts." ~ John Bonham

We have a cabin in 29 palms California not far from the marine base. The Marines would do maneuvers about 10 miles away over a mountain ridge. We could hear the tanks, bazookas, mortars etc. But when someone came to visit you couldn't hear them drive up. I never set my drums out there in the desert but it does sound interesting.

Ha ! Here are some words of wisdom from the soundman at the casino we played last month . He was ranting about the "Santana Tribute" band that had played the night before and how the timbale player got on his nerves because he wanted him to mic both the top and bottom of the drums . Here's what he told me :
" You don't really need to mic those drums up in here . Those things CARRY ! The guy hits em pretty hard too . Who does he think he is telling ME how to mic them !? You know ... people use to use drums to communicate over long distances a looooong time ago . Over long distances !! What's with this obsession with micking everything now !? Besides , this room is designed to concentrate the music in this area..from the bar to here . The last thing we want to do is bother the people over there playing the slot machines ! They are the ones making us all the money anyway ...not the BANDS ! Do you know what I did ? I mic everything like he wanted me too but I had all his faders off at the board !! Fool wasn't going through the PA at all...and he didn't even know it !! "
There you go . Drums were used to communicate over long distances .

    Interesting...
I live near water and the other day I took my snare outside to play some exercises and my Mums friend over the other side messaged her and said ' Bridie a playing loud today!'
She was cool about it though
