Default New Ride(s) day! Zildjian Kerope & Constantinople

I've been really hitting it hard the past year with a band called The Bobbie Morrone Trio. We play bluesy-funky-jazzy pop sort of music and it has been an absolute blast. This kind of music is majorly fun to play.

As we've been taking the band a lot more seriously, I decided to invest a bit more into the band in the realm of cymbals. For this kind of music we're playing, both of the 24" heartbeats weren't really doing it. I wanted something a teeny bit smaller with a bit more of a jazzy-sound.

Enter the Kerope and Constantinople. We were about to track our first full-length record and I knew I needed/wanted a different sounding ride for the music, so I ended up grabbing a 22" Kerope super late at night on a whim.

I LOVE it. Gosh dang. The cymbal sounds like it's older than me. It's washy with enough stick definition to still be played with the tip. Funnily enough, it's actually quieter than any of my other rides too, which I like because I have a lot lighter touch with this band.

While I love the Kerope, none of my other rides were really pairing with it super well, so on another whim I nabbed a 22" Medium Constantinople. I swear I've watched every single youtube video of these rides and it has got to be my favorite ride sound on the planet. That should be coming in this week, so I'll get to play the pair together at a couple weekend gigs here soon. I'll report back with a more in detail perspective on the Constantinople.

Might have to grab me some new hats to match these rides here soon

Nice "on a whim" purchase. Those are the best kind. I'll be interested in your thoughts between the 22" Kerope and the 22" med. Constantinople when the later arrives. Thanks...

Thanks! I'll for sure come back with that. I have a hunch that the 22" med. Con is going to be the right-side ride and the Kerope is going to be the left, as every video I've watched as the med. Con having a lot more stick definition while still having some great undertones, but I'm excited to truly compare them. The only thing I could see maybe being an issue is if the med. Con is so much louder than the Kerope, but I believe they're both modeled after vintage K's so I think they're going to work together really, really well.

...well that took WAY longer than expected. Finally got the Constantinople in last night. Only got to use it in a low-volume rehearsal but GOLLY is is slick. Have a show this Friday at a venue with great sound so I'm excited to really put it through its paces and see how it holds up. I do believe that it is going to pair with the Kerope very nicely!

The 22" Constantinople medium is a beautiful cymbal. It has a nice dark swish to it. Nice stick definition too.

I only got to hit it pretty softly, but I totally agree. Such a lovely sound!

Alright I've had them for over a week, played a couple shows with them, and had multiple rehearsals.

I'm in love! I feel like I've been in love with every new cymbal purchase, but this one "feels" more intense :D

The 22" medium Con has got to be the best cymbal on the planet. The tone that resonates/washes underneath the defined stick-tip sound is lovely. It's enough wash that playing with the tip doesn't feel empty, but not so much that it drowns out the tip sound. Then when you lay into it with the shoulder it really opens up. Not as quickly as say, my 24" thin Heartbeat ride, but it doesn't take too much at all. I could use hats and only this ride for a show and be content.

Then there is the 22" Kerope that pairs just so well. It's thinner, a bit softer, and a bit washier, but that's how I like my left-side ride to be. It is definitely a different tone than the Con, but you can tell that they're from the same family.

My original plan was to get these two rides for my band and jazz stuff, but I like these two rides together so much for all different genres that I'm actually going to be selling both of my 24" Heartbeat rides. They're fantastic cymbals, but I just don't see myself ever choosing them over these two Zildjians. Guess I'm a zildjian man now!

It has been about a month now of playing this new setup and thought I'd give a bit of an update.

    Man o man o man.

I LOVE these cymbals. I've gotten play use them in a couple different musical contexts now and I love them for each and every one. Can not recommend these things enough!

I even threw two rivets into the Constantinople cause it had the holes for it and that is a dang fun sound to play with.
