Yea out here they did away with the Octo . They have a Tama Superstar kit set up behind a screen and no Octo .
All the other years before they always had a DW kit set up . And they were handing out DW swag on the day of the competition . But this year it's as if they lost the wind in their sails and the attitude is like...meh . I hear they had very few people sign up this year here in Tucson . The one in Phoenix is far more interesting .

Last year was weak here in Rockford, IL

But this year they doubled the number of contestants.

I'm so happy to get rid of the octopad.

Behind a screen? As in the judges couldn't see the drummer?
I love that idea. I sound much better than I look.
Also, takes away the impact of stick tricks, which I can't do.
    Proudly playing:
    Doc Sweeney Drums
    A bunch of snares
    A bunch of cymbals

    Off-Set double pedals

I think I love to play the drums simply because you get to hit 'em!!!

One of my younger students and his father went to one of them last night. (fyi - student is too young to compete).

Dad called me afterwards....said it was awful and nothing but "monkey drumming".

Well it was one of those plexiglass Sound Shields . Meinl cymbals and Iron Cobras .
I'm with you on sounding better than I look ! LOL But in my case it's one of those things where the dancers close their eyes or look away when they get close to me ! LOL !
I like the stick twirls . It's one of those things that I feel are appropriate in a solo or a contest . It will either put you over the top...or sink you .

I agree that stick tricks are always perfect in the solo setting. I've seen some tossing of sticks and twirls that were very cool.
I just never put the time into learning to do them. I can twirl a bit, but only right handed. My left doesn't like to hold onto the stupid stick when I twirl. Goes round once, maybe twice and gone! LOL Bassist better be ready to duck!

I’m so sad they aren’t doing GC drumoffs this year in a lot of the areas of the southeast. I’ve judged GC drumoffs along the gulf coast
for the past four years and seen so many amazing drummers come through! Anyone competing hit me up....we judge by the same criteria sets every year and some things are more important than others when preparing the contest Can’t tell you what they are but I can help anyone who wants any recommendations on the contest
