Default Cleaned up the new ride

So I got the used 20" Zildjian Medium Ride from my instructor Thursday night and cleaned it this morning. Man Barkeepers Friend does great work! The only thing is the old owner had put 3 strips of tape on the underside of it years ago and the residue would not come off. Anyone know a safe way to remove without damaging the cymbal? I took pictures of before and after cleaning as well as the stamp and would love to upload, but can't figure out how to I have uploaded the images to an album on my profile page, but can't figure out what else I need to do. Coffee hasn't kicked in I guess.

Goo Gone will take that tape or any old adhesive right off. Completely safe. You can get it at Walmart or the hardware store.

Yes, I agree Goo Gone will work good.
It wont come off easily though. I recommend painting it over the tape gently, let it sit a few minutes before removing. This may take a few applications, fingernail scrapings and an old t-shirt to wipe with a clean surface each time. It will come off in layers.

Another product called "Goof Off" will take it off much easier but it may remove the Zildjian logo if it were to get on there. Do it in a well ventilated area.
In either case of product being used, I'd cover the logo with painters tape and try to avoid getting it on there.

If you had tape on your drum wrap you needed to remove for instance, Goo Gone may be safe. Goof Off may just warp/melt the vinyl wrap.

I use GooGone on everything...including heads, wrap and chrome. I also use it to release the glue when stripping the wrap off old drum shells. It works great to clean almost anything. Works great to clean bugs & tar off your car bumpers as well. When I bought my old F250 pickup, it was covered in Commercial advertising decals (old delivery truck). After removing the decals with a 3M eraser wheel & cordless drill, I used GooGone to take off all the residual adhesive left behind. You do need to let it soak to be more effective. The only bad part is it does leave an oily residue behind that may need to be cleaned. Not a big deal on metal or paint but it will attract dust if you don't clean it off with something like dish soap or Windex.

Very nice!! WD-40 will take the tape off. Spray some on and leave it overnight. I used it to take one of those thick Remo falam slams off my bass drum head.

When I first read the heading I thought you were talking about your car ! LOL !

I've always used WD-40 to get sticky stuff off . Works on getting off permanent marker too . Then when you're done getting the sticky stuff off you just wash it with regular old dish soap to get the grease off .

I've got the same thing (not quite as bad as yours) on my old ride. Hpe you find something that works. I'd like to get the residue off the bottom of mine but I don't want to clean the patina off.

An old rag and gasoline will remove tape residue in seconds, best to wrap the cloth around your finger and just wipe the glue residue directly. Don't soak the rag and wipe around the whole cymbal as it will remove the logos instantly!

If you have some Ronsonol lighter fluid that will also do the trick, but its no better than regular gas and about 50 times more expensive.

Well the Goo Gone took some off but not all. I think it is due to how long the tape was on there. Still looks a ton better than when I got it.

So I took nail polish remover to the tape strips and once it did it's magic I re-did the bottom with Barkeepers Friend to polish it up. You can still just barely see a discoloration where the tape was, but looks a ton better.

OldeEnglishD, you did good on this one ...

I took the liberty to do a little investigating and according to this guide, it looks like your cymbal is a 1980's CO stamp manufactured sometime between 1982 and 1986. From your pictures, the cymbal has solid logo markings with the Zildjian CO stamp and is in very good condition.

I wish that I would have seen sooner ... yes, WD-40 and acetone (finger nail polish remover) are great for removing sticky junk but acetone will also remove logo ink if you're not careful ...

Thanks! That guide is awesome! Thanks for sharing. I was very careful around all the logos with all the different cleaners. I was really happy how it turned out, especially as I feel I got a great deal on it ($85). There are no cracks/keyholes, etc. Next up is a crash or 2 for my birthday!
