    CC1918,

It seems to me going by what you are asking, you want to know what would be the best up tom would be with whatever size FT you are using.

I've always looked at it this way:

12" up tom to a 14" FT is fine as you can keep a even balance in the sound going from 1 to the other.
12" up tom going to a 16" FT to me seems like you would have to tune a 12" too low or a 16" too high to balance out the sound.

In other words, again, in my way of looking at it is: 12' to 14"=fine, 12" to 16"=not fine. A 13"x9" would be what I would use with a 16" FT as you could tune for a better progression going from up to down. Same with a 12" to a 14".

I don't know if you have seen any of my videos. If you have, you would notice that I keep the toms tuned so that there is a even sound (progression) from up to down. What I'm saying (or trying to say) is the drums would go, from snare to BD on a 1up 1down set, 1 2 3 4 as opposed to 1 2 4 6.

    My set is 13x9, 14x10, 16x16, and 18x16 (I'm not counting the 2 toms mounted over the FT's. I want the sound (progression) to be, from snare to BD, to be 1 2 3 4 5 6, not 1 3 4 6 8 10.

If this doesn't make any sense to you, it didn't to me when I read it over after I finished writing it. I just know what I'm trying to say.

    My kits are as follows;

    UP DN

    8 13
    10 13
    12. 16
    13. 16

A lot depends on the pitch spread you want. Typically it's a 4th or 5th. The sizes to achieve this depend on the shell thickness, heads and tuning range of the shells. Most new 4pc kits use 12/16. 13/16 is more of a vintage configuration......but both actually work well. 12/14 seems to be more prevalent in Jazz kits. My favorite is my PDP 12/16. I can easily tune the spread to a 4th and both shells are in their "sweet spot" in terms of shell resonance. The pitch of the 12" also makes for a good starting pitch for fills. Not too high, not too low. The 16"FT can be a little too low & "rumbly" for some fills, and I like the punch of the 13" FT on my smaller kits. I suspect that a 12/14 would fit my playing and taste best....so the next kit I buy will be a 12/14.

totally make sense, i have a 16 ft so I'm doing 12 to 16, play mostly rock so i agree that th 13 up tom would be a better progression

I think it depends, too, on what sound do you want to hear the most/first when playing that tom coming off the snare:high pitched snare going to low pitched up-tom or low pitched (fat) snare to high pitched up-tom?

12,15,24 here. I know 15" is weird, but it's a great FT. 13x9 is a great size to me and 13,16 is the "new cool". 3" increments just work. I'm planning on adding an 18" eventually. 12,15,18,24! The new "new cool".

I currently am using a 12/14. They sound similar but different enough. For what its worth, I know Mike Johnston uses 10/16 and his sound is great. So theres really no right/wrong.

If I recall, Marco on here also uses a 10/16 combo (?). I don't think any of my cheap drums have a enough tuning range to be able to pull the 10/16 combo off.

That's what's so cool about drums; there is no right or wrong! It's all about finding your own sound. I also have the 2 early '70s Ludwig kits that I'm working on restoring. One will be the classic rock 13/16/22 set. The other will be a more unique 14/16/28 combo. I guess it will be kind of a "Bonzo Jazz" kit, LOL. I'm excited to see how that one works out.

My tom layout is 8"x12", & 14"x16" with a 16"x22" kick. I can understand the school of thought that a 4" differential between your rack and floor tom might be too wide. I used to share this opinion as well, but consider that if you're playing a 4-piece kit, you'd want a more pronounced distinction in pitches between your tom-toms since there are fewer of them overall on your kit.

It also depends on the drums, themselves. Some 12" rack toms have a lower fundamental pitch (due to wood makeup and ply/shell thickness) that works better with 16" floor toms.

I agree with this. (pronounced distinction) Within the 4 pc format, I'd favor 10,14,18 or 12,16,20.

13" toms can sound very good though!

    all the best...

Going from a gigging perspective If possible the ideal setup for 1up 1 down is 13 and 16 but in reality it usually ends up 12,14 or 12, 16

I'm enjoying 2 up 3 down ..way more musical options
