Right now, I'm learning songs with drum tracks written and played by heavy metal drummer Vinny Appice formerly of Black Sabbath, Dio and Last In Line. Vinny tracked 8 songs that are on a soon to be released CD featuring all original music that a local singer/songwriter recorded by file sharing between 4 different professional musicians which included Vinny. My role as a local drummer is to take the 8 songs and learn them to my best ability by keeping Vinny's style in mind, then move forward with my style of playing to write and record more music for the singer/songwriter. He has reached out to other local musicians who has joined this band to play out at local gigs.

You're not intruding at all! I love blasting the live version of Moby Dick with the 20 minute drum solo and seeing how long it takes for someone to tell me to skip it.

Cool! I remember when I was just starting out I loved playing along to the Clash. They have some interesting beats that are fairly simple but not the same thing you've done a million times.

It's not so much one song, it's more or less the whole album.
Queensryche Op:Mindcrime has been a fav since it came out.
Other than that, I don't know...
The early Dio albums, various AOR/Hardrock-tracks, "Rising force" by Yngwie, "Pull me under" by DT and a whole lot more. Depends on my mood I guess.

Love that tune and album. I use to play to it years ago, going to have to give it a run though again. Thanks for the reminder.

WOW, NP................I'm glad you told me that.
It's certainly not the hardest YES tune to play but it is one of the most interesting compositions.
That is exactly why I chose it for a school project.

The next semester, I transcribed TO BE OVER for a 10-man percussion ensemble.
Two vibraphones carried the guitar and vocal part and I played the bass part on a concert grand marimba...............it turned out better than I would have ever guessed.
The instructor/conductor liked it so much, he put it in our competition presentation.

Speaking of Yes, I like to play Changes from 90125. I once saw them at Starplex in Dallas and they had both Alan White and Bill Bruford with Trevor Rabin. That was one of the top 5 concerts I have ever seen.

    Agree^^ Changes is great.

Recently, have played Two Princes (Spin Doctors) (fun), Everybody Get Dangerous (Weezer) (also fun). Not overly demanding (though there are a lot of nuances to focus on, like the ghost notes in Two Princes), but definitely a blast.
"I consider every drummer that ever played before me an influence, in every way." (Buddy Rich)

"How do you keep 90 people together with one stick? I've got two sticks and i can't keep 5 people together." (Ian Paice)
