A brand name is a brand name and there's not really much more to it. Many Evans products are almost identical to Remo's and vice versa.
If I had to choose one though, I'd say Evans although my set is entirely equipped with Remo heads right now lol.

I've found the Evans coated heads are much more durable than their Remo counterparts.

I've used Remo heads for more years than I can remember. Just recently (about a year and a half ago) I switched over to Evans heads. One of the main reasons I switched to Evans was because I heard that their coatings are much more durable over that of Remo, and I found out that they were correct. When I bought my Tama Starclassic Bubinga kit, it came equipped with all Evans heads. G1 clears for the toms reso heads and G2 clears for the batters. The bass drum came with an EQ 4 batter.
When I purchased my Yamaha Absolute Maple kit, it had all Remo heads all around. I tried them, but within hours, I changed all the heads, except the Yamaha bass drum reso head, to all Evans.
My antique Pearl kit never sounded better until it experienced Evans heads.
This is just my experience, yours may differ.

As can you see...
They have own fans.....
I'm a Remo guy....
But I must admit that EVANS made a lot of good stuff as well...

It's all personal pref of course; but just a couple observations:
Remo heads seem to tune up and break in much faster, though they don't seem to last as long. Evans will take a lot of tweaking to get a good sound ( I recommend a DrumDial when using Evans,) but will just get better and better sounding the more they break in, and they will sound great longer.
Evans used to have the rep as the "deader" head; but they have really improved their product over the last 20 years and they are much livelier heads.
And the trees are all kept equal by hatchet, axe, and saw. . .
I use Remo on my snare and Evans on my toms and bass drums.
i use both

Remo: pinstripe or emperors over ambassadors (on toms)
Aquarian: Superkick and a Regulator (bass)
on snare... I have a variety of Remo and Aquarian heads... one set of Evans that I'm waiting to replace.

I use Remo heads after hearing only the stock heads on my M Birch! Its a personal choice and I'm honest theres not much in it but the name, but my kit came with Remo's and I just having a feeling I'll keep it that way, maybe some Emperors next with Ambassador Resos

Evans are so much more durable and consistent than the Remo counterparts. I've never been a fan of pinstripes, and I don't care for the frosted EC2's I just put on my Ludwig's.

Toms: Evans G2 Clear/Evans Genera Reso

I have the Mapex M birch with Evans Hydrualics, i love it. They have the most range out of any of the heads i have ever used I recommend at least trying them. They feel great, and the oild in between the plies eliminates the annoying overtones. They sound good punchy, and they sound good nice and warm. BEST HEADS BY FAR imho.
as for a birch kick. Im still using the stock head, but Im going for the aquarium super kick 2 when im ready to upgrade.
