Atlanta Pro Percussion just got one in. A big rock kit. 26" kick!. I didn't care too much for the finish which is called white camo I think. They have a ton of choices for finishes which is cool. Thier website is kinda fun to mess around with.

At a rehearsal session yesterday, finally had the chance to beat on the M Birch kit I bought for $300 about a year ago. My, they sounded fantastic.

Anyone else hate their hanging 16" Pro M tom?
I have years of experience tuning drums. All my drums can sound good with some work. It seems though, without tuning the 16" tom super high, it sounds like a flat paper sack!! This drum has very little sustain and tons of attack. This thing is awful and has never really been a great sounding drum. Do the floor tom models sound any better? Could it be a flawed drum?
I have loked it over extensively without seeing any visible imperfections that may affect the sound.
I want to burn it! All of my hate for this drum inspires me to buy a completely new kit, as I use my six piece Pro M as two different kits (Large block and Small block).

Not a Mapex but I hate my hanging 16" Starclassic tom. Same deal, just sounds terrible and floppy unless tuned way higher than I like. Now, my hanging 14" sounds like a million bucks.

Interesting. My 16" Pro M tom is on legs with spring-loaded feet and it sounds great. Granted, I'm using an EC2 on it, which definitely supports lower tunings.

Yes, the 14" sounds nice here too. Must be a 16" thing. One would think that a suspended tom would have a longer sustain than a floor tom.

I thought about conversion, but finding the right mapex hardware for conversion has been challenging, and expensive.

I have replaced the heads twice and tuned the reso head different ways. it either goes up or down.

Also, I heard a rumor that the bearing edges are backcut. Is this true?

    good vid ..poor cymbal

i think maybe your kit could resonate better at a slightly higher pitch ..might just be the room ..still sounds great tho

    Thanks Itchie!

    R.I.P AAX 18" Stage Crash.

Do you mean for me to tune everything higher? The snare is really cracky in real life but I can't get the real crack without making it sound massively compressed. The same problem with the thud for the bassdrum as you can probably hear.

I posted this in the 'birds eye' thread but seeing as these are Mapex drums I thought I'd post here too. Modest, but the'll do me for now.

^gotta love that black hardware contrasting with the white of that kit. What name did they give to that shade of white, Itchie?
