As you might know from the Show Us Your Drums thread, we went with the Brushed Metallic Black w/ Black Hardware. One it was all they had in stock, and two we like the look.
That's a sweet finish on yours. For my son, I was glad we got wrapped drums. Don't want him worrying too much about them (he's almost 14), particularly with his 5 year old sister playing them occasionally.
Personally I loved the stained and lacquered finishes, they just make the drums looks special, like a nice guitar finish.

Okay in my quest to avoid buying a new set but getting a nice 2nd set I've found a few things. One is this Tama Swingstar 4 piece for $280.

For $280, how could you go wrong?

Well in comparison, they also have a Mapex Mars Pro for $299 and it's a 5 piece shell kit. Although it's looking better in terms of actually getting something new, seems that the Mapex might be a "higher end" kit than the Swingstar.
I think I had a Swingstar around 1990 that I used as a 2nd kit. If memory serves it was about $700 with hardware, and I left it set up to practice and my Crestar's stayed packed for shows. Does that sound like the right vintage, or maybe they were Rockstar's? I do remember that there were definitely lower end than my Crestar kit.

Just looked on the Tama Catalog site and from the catalogs it looks like it must have been a Rockstar. Swingstar's were gone by then.

I miss my Rockstar kit, it was the first brand new kit i bought back in 99' and i rocked them hard until May of 08.

Don't have these now, but I played I Superstar in Mahogony finish from 88-92(12,13,16,22) then sold them (huge mistake) and bought a Grandstar in Dark Blue (10,12,13,14,16,22) that I had until around 2000, when I went with another brand. Both these kits sounded amazing. I kept the pedal that came with the Grandstar and still use it.
Bish, did you win lotto or something? You have so many nice kits. Those are sweet! Check out those shiny cymbals!
SR, I'm still rocking Tama Crestars from 1987. They are a little beat up in the finish, and I contemplated selling them and getting a new Mapex kit, but others helped me see the error of my ways. Now I'm just hoping to add a Mapex kit as a 2nd kit.

So as many know I had a bit of a mid-life crisis with my drums over the last week or two. Neglecting to look at the badges, I couldn't remember if they were Granstar Customs or Crestars. I figured out they were Crestars from the badge, but the catalog photos showing a white wood snare threw me off. Some chalked it up to varying configs back in those days.
Well, lo and behold, Fedr comments on a pic in my profile and what do I notice for the first time ever? A white wood snare. Apparently it was the original snare for the kit. I must have replaced it with a metal snare at some point. I'm guessing that when I sold my Rockstar's I had as a practice kit, I sold them with the Crestar snare, and kept the Rockstar metal snare. Or the white snare got damaged, but I don't recall that.
Oh well, I was probably left with the lesser of the 2 snares, and I'm playing a 5.5x14 Metalworks right now anyway.
On the note of the metalworks, I like it a lot, but I'm leaning towards a wood snare. Can someone give me the rundown. Given that I'm looking to get a Mapex 2nd kit, I can always use the snare for that, but I'm contemplating getting another wood snare as well. What's the biggest difference between wood and metal?
I know the generic, wood is warmer, metal is louder, I'm looking for something more specific.

I am a fan off tama. Great sounding kits! I don't have one tho lol
Bish,
Those simply fantastic!
I love the way you have the toms set up. That is how I set up a 5 piece as well. It is so easy to move between the snare and the toms.
nice kit!!!
