These have G14 (360 model) on top and G1 (regular model) on bottom. Kick has a PS Pro on batter and PS3 logo head on reso.

Thought I'd jump in and add my sons set we just got. Any info/tips/tricks would be great!!! I posted in the main area before I saw this post:

Here is a kit I just got for my 8yr old son, (well he is paying for part of it)

Yamaha Beech Custom, Made in Japan

    6 pc set:
    10x8 - WTT810 0M-5643
    12x9 - WTT812 0M-5643
    14x11 - WTT814 0M-0134
    16x13 - WTT816 0M-5657
    22x18 - WBD822 0M-5688

The cymbals are junk (except for 1) so that is the next upgrade path.

This is a terrible iPhone recording of him playing them for the first time at lunch. He was pretty excited couldn't hardly play.

I had the pleasure of hearing this kit in person last night during a clinic put on by jazz great Jeff Hamilton.

    2.jpg

It's Yamaha's flagship Phoenix line in Textured Amber Burst. This is the only model still handcrafted in Japan and it looked and sounded amazing.

11 plies make up this kit. The center ply, jatoba, is an extremely hard wood that provides the drum's core note. On either side are four plies of kapur, which is a softer wood than jatoba. The inner and outer plies of the shell are customized, using maple or a combination of a burled ash outer ply and a maple inner ply.

Kapor is a dipterocarp hardwood from trees of the genus Dryobalanops found in lowland tropical rain forests of Malaysia, Indonesia and South-East Asia. It is a durable construction tropical timber.

Jatoba is probably most commonly known in North America as “Brazilian Cherry,” and it has been adopted largely by the flooring industry.

    Specs:

    Rack tom: 12x8"
    Floor tom: 14x13"
    Bass drum: 18x16"

    MSRP for 3pc: $4,699.98

    Features:

    30 degree bearing edges
    Die-Cast hoops
    Quick "pop off" lugs.

Here's a really short :14 sec video I took with my phone to give you an idea how it sounded.

Welcome to the forum Drumnhands! I have a late 90's stage custom (chestnut brown stain) that I wouldn't trade for noth'in! I did some hardware modifications on the tom mounting end of it and I'm quite pleased on the results. I bought the kit new and l l ordered the 9X10 in. tom a week later and it became a positive thing. I have 6 very good kits and my Stage Custom is definitely one of my GO TO kits!

Hey Drumnhands, welcome to Drumchat! I'm going to ask you some questions right off. I've been pondering a Phoenix kit for some time now (currently have DW Collectors). I've read so many thing about the Phoenix, and almost all have had nothing but superlative reports. I wanted to know if the Phoenix drums are still being manufactured by hand in Japan. Are there any 'unpublished' examples of finishes that are available? If an order was placed today, do you have a sense at all at what delivery time might be?

Looking forward to hearing back from you, and again, welcome!
Now, just a tiny bit less than an absolute drum newbie
DW Collectors Cherry kit, Ludwig Black Beauty Snare, DW SuperSolid Oak/Cherry Snare, DW Sabian Vault Edge Snare

I can answer at least two of those questions.

The PHX were, are and will be made in Japan.

This is the latest color catalog, the PHX line has the most options regarding finishes and outer-ply options:

I opted for the Ash Textured Garnett Mono:

This is probably the best playing kit I own. Everything is so fluid with this setup, the Yamaha hardware makes it such an easy kit to setup and tune. I probably prefer the look of my Maple Custom in Vintage Natural but this is a better playing drum set with the thinner shells and aluminum did cast hoops.

Setup is 8,10,12,16,20 and an Anton Fig signature snare drum.

Just found a SD4105 seamless Brass 5.5x14 and it’s the perfect brass snare! I had an older version a while back that I sold in tough times. Yamaha snares have great mojo.

Hi Drumnhands, my question as I'm looking at a new gig kit, a Yamaha Stage Custom Birch 5 piece with 20 inch bass drum in natural finish. Will there be a weight savings over my 1969 Ludwig 5 piece set with 22 inch Bass and chrome snare? I'm also looking into lighter hardware etc. I need to save on weight for transporting and setting up and down for gigs without losing quality and sound quality??

I doubt the new Yamaha’s will be lighter than the old 69 3-ply Ludwigs...probably, almost certainly heavier.

"Too many crappy used drum stuff to list"

    Play the SONG......not the DRUMS!!!

"I think that feeling is a lot more important than technique. It's all very well doing a triple paradiddle - but who's going to know you've done it? If you play technically you sound like everybody else. It's being original that counts." ~ John Bonham

Yeah, that’s what I’m afraid of but the size of these at least might fit better in my SUV. Thanks for the advice!
