I stumbled on to a B/O badge Acro today for $150. After looking it over, I noticed some issues. It was missing the muffler (but the holes were there), the strainer had been replaced with a new P85 but there was an extra hole in the shell where another strainer had been, and finally, the snare side hoop sat almost flush with the bearing edge on one side while it was about 3/8" higher on the opposite side. I don't think anything was bent, but whoever installed the bottom head had no clue what they were doing. Also, the snares were so tight that they had wore a pin hole in one spot on the reso head. Overall, I could have made it work. I have a spare muffler, hoops and heads. The B/O badge would match my project kits. BUT...I felt that a $150 Acro should not have extra holes drilled in the shell, missing pieces and bad heads. So...I walked away.

    Good call .
There was one listed here for $80 on CL . I sent the guy an email and a day later he gets back to me and said the price was now $200 ! He said he knew nothing about drums but did some research and found that this was a "collectors drum" and so he was pricing it appropriately . And since I was the first to respond to his add I was given "first shot" . Well needless to say I didn't bother to respond . The thing is still listed ...been there a week now .

Yeah, I still see Acro's on occasion in "like new" condition for ~$125. $100 will get you a Blacrolite with the soft case and stand (student kit). I would have paid $75 to $80...maybe $100 tops.

Yes, I must have developed a case of Acrolite fever, because I bought another one. This one is earlier. B&O badge. I wanted a specific look, so I took off the powder coat finish, polished the bead and did a brushed finish on the shell above and below the bead. Turned out pretty nice. I plan to give it a thourough beating tomorrow afternoon.

Cut it large and kick it into place!

When a Acro comes my way I might just snag one! In the meantime I just ordered a 'Black Magic' 7x13. I hope I like it!

10 Things I like about Acrolites: 1. They can sound good 2. Very versatile, tune up, tune down, use as a primary snare, auxiliary snare, or a backup. 3. They made these for years and years so they are everywhere, and parts are readily available. 4 They show up on Craigslist or LetGo being sold by people who are trying to get their kids old crap out of their garage so they will take $30 to $50 bucks for them with the case! 5. The aluminum alloy shell takes well to polishing, etching, painting, sanding, the creative possibilities are endless. 6. Ludwig brand name, the drum will always be worth something. 7.Easy to work on, built like a tank. 8. Interesting history, it's fun researching all the different configurations and badge styles there have been. 9. Something to talk about with other interested drummers. 10. They can sound good!

My 7X13 Black Magic is my favorite snare right now..................love the 13 inch size and it is very versatile.................every head I have tried sounds good.
The throw is good, not great................I've had zero trouble with it.................I keep the snares up all the time anyway.
The black nickel is gorgeous....................Ludwig makes some awesome snares and this one is one of their best...............a tremendous value too.

I really like 13" snares too. The combo of 13" diameter and 8 lugs seems to be a very nice mix of sound and tuning. I have 8 vintage Ludwig classic double-ended snare lugs made for wood shells (no center rib), just laying around collecting dust. I'm thinking of ordering a new 13x7 Keller shell and making my own custom snare using the Ludwig lugs and nice aftermarket hoops and strainer.

Thank you for the positive input! I just ordered a dunnett/gibraltar R7B in black throw for it. The black diecast snare butt on it looks just fine! I'll do a little modification on it,but it will turn out cool. I have the proper tools for it. A lot of my snares have alternate throws on them.

I had my eye on the 7x13" Black Magic too...from reading opinions here (Ricardo's), I'll look into one for myself as soon as I'm done swapping out heads on two kits. Now that can get pretty expensive.

I agree on all points you made. I ended up "inheriting" my wife's Blue/Olive 5.5x14" Acrolite. It was her snare during high school stage band. When I opened the case for the first time, I found a Remo Black dot batter and the factory snares and factory reso. I swapped out both heads and found a spare 12 strand Ludwig snare wires that came off my Black Beauty and wow, "It's Alive Again"

Keller has the new "magnum" shells that use thicker plies...so for the same overall shell thickness you have less plies, which means more wood and less glue. I'd probably buy the shell with bearing edges and snare bed already cut, so all I'd have to do is drill holes, stain (or wrap) and assemble. Hardest part is deciding what stain or wrap.

I kept the stock snare-side reso head and the batter is currently an Aquarian coated Hi Velocity (2 X 7 mil with a thin white reverse power dot); this specific head with the cast hoops (love the cast hoops) needs no damping at all.
I bought the head because the local shop did not have my preferred choice in stock that day................I just thought I'd try something new.
I expected it to be too thick and too dead.................actually, as expected, it is very sturdy but yet surprisingly warm and versatile too.
I've got it cranked tight and it really pops; this thing has more crack than a porn flick.

    OK.....struck by GAS again. Walked into the "used" store to look at an old Hammond organ amp for my brother. Ended up walking out with this;

Slightly used Supralite 14x8. Couldn't pass it up for $125.

Yep. That's what the little drummer inside my head whispered in my ear. I was just in there last Thursday, but Iwalked back to check out the used snares..."just in case they HAPPENED to get something in over the weekend". As soon as I saw it, I grabbed it off the rack. I looked at the price tag and walked directly up to the counter. Didn't even give it the detailed look-over I usually do. It's perfect except for the wear spot in the factory head. I'm open to suggestions for a replacement. Thinking about a basic coated Emperor.

That's the Hammond organ amp chassis my brother wanted. Paid $35 for it. It has all vintage black plate tubes. According to my brother, the tubes alone are worth a couple hundred.
