Yeah I do Fred. I crank the heads until they are about to choke the drum. My snareside often times stretches until the rims are almost level with the bearing edge. I like it tight like this because then when I do rimshots the drum opens up like a powerful gunshot.

I do love a tight snare and high pitched. I dont like to choke it so the snares dont kick in, though. Gotta let the snares rattle a bit. I prefer an open and sensitive sounding snare
I play, Gretsch Catalina Birch, 7 piece in the vintage sunburst finish.

I like it high pitched but not enough to choke the drum

I tune my snare for a nice full bodied sound. If I wanted a higher pitch I would buy a smaller piccolo drum.

I used to crank 'em up as well..now I find that I like more body from my snare drum. I with those who say to opt for a smaller diameter drum for the high pitched stuff. -Les

i have tuned my snare both ways, if you get the sweet spot on low or high tuning, the drum will sound amazing no matter what. currently my snare is a 14x4.5 and its tuned high, i like the high pitched crack that it gives off, and i like the loud projection for live shows, it mixes good with all of the other high pitched noises going on during a live show.

That's my choice as well. I like my big snare to sound open, and let it sing. My piccolo gives me a nice short, high-pitched crack, without sounding too shallow.

Depends on what sound you're looking for. I tune my snare batter head a bit lower than most of you would. I have Gene Krupa in mind and listen for that resonant syncopated playing of the snare drum. As most of you play more contemporary music, I can appreciate the "Crack" of a tight batter head...sound great!

I keep my snare pretty tight. I don't like the head to give way too much. It's a piccolo snare though so I guess it's expected. Not sure. The bounce I get on it is great and its pretty close to the feel of a practice pad. I love the sound of it.

I like mine pretty tight as well, but not so tight that it sounds like a piccolo. I still want to hear some tone out of it.

Have you guys seen this Chris Adler Mapex sig snare yet? Looks killer: 12x5.5. I'm sure it sounds good 'high & tight'.

I want one but I don't need another 12", mine already rocks my world. If I get another snare I want an RCI acrylic 'Atomic' snare...

    I do like them tight.

But... Each drum has it's own sound. My 6 x 14 Alloy Classic sounds better tuned lower, but the same drum in 4.5 x 14 sounds better cranked up.

I tune both top and bottom heads as close to each other as possible. I keep the snares at a medium tension, with no muffling whatsoever. I like them loud and wet, with plenty of buzz and ring. Some people want to get rid of all the ring but don't realize that when you add guitars and amps it's going to sound different.

Also my piccolo tends to sound small and low in volume in larger rooms. I was very surprised when I played it at a small bar. i might have to bust out my Acrylite (think thats how it's spelled) snare. I reall don't like that thing. Just preference though.
